Pet Lovers Give Blood at the Peterborough Humane Society Blood Drive Event

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has partnered with the Canadian Blood Services Peterborough to host a Pet Lovers Give Blood event on July 13 and 20 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Members of the PHS team will be donating at the Peterborough Donor Centre (55 George St. N) as they call upon the community to do the same.

The QR Code and will direct those to the Pet Lovers Peterborough Team that can also be used to book appointments.

First Responders Roll Up Their Sleeves for Sirens For Life Blood Drive

The Sirens For Life campaign encourages Police, Fire and Medical services to donate blood during the summer months, which is often when blood is in high demand.

Sirens For Life invites Police Officers, Paramedics, Firefighters and any first responder to donate blood.

Inspector John Lyons has been with the Peterborough Police Department for 35 years, and has been donating blood since then.

“As a first responder I have seen up close and personal the need for blood products arise from the traumatic events that are often seen in policing, EMS or Fire services,” said Lyons.

Lyons says that his experience as a first responder has provided him with knowledge of what donating blood can accomplish and how important it is.

“One thing I can say for sure is donating blood doesn’t hurt you,” Lyons said. “I’ve never donated blood and felt that I’d lost anything.”

Typically, from the May 24 weekend to the August long weekend, first responders are called to more accidents requiring blood, according to Lyons. This can be because of the influx of people outside, on the road and at their cottages, though he notes the need for blood is year round.

“There’s a lot worse things than donating blood, you could be the one in a trauma center needing it, but here we are with the ability to donate it.”

Peterborough Petes Cap Off Community Challenge with Blood Drive

The next chapter of the Peterborough Petes and Be a Hero Challenge continues with a blood drive in partnership with Canadian Blood Services and Hockey Gives Blood on Tuesday.

The blood drive is held at Canadian Blood Services at 55 George St. N from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is fully booked. An expected outcome considering the Petes fanbase to Jill Gemmiti, Canadian Blood Services event coordinator.

“The Peterborough Petes have such a great fanbase,” she said. “It did not surprise me at all.”

Gemmiti encourages the community to continue giving blood as there is always a need for donors.

“We need people to continue to donate,” she said. “I was looking at our April numbers and we need 207 people.”

The blood drive caps of the end of the Be a Hero Challenge as the Petes — and the Oshawa Generals as part of their rivalry — encouraged their fanbase to get on the stem cell registry donor list.

Their goal is at least 1000 registrants and to have more than the Generals as part of the challenge. The losing team will have their mascot wear the winner’s jersey and results will be announced on Apr 2.

All participants of the Petes Blood Drive will receive a Hockey Gives Blood swag bag and participate in a digital Petes trivia during their appointment for a chance to win additional prizes.

Peterborough Petes Rallies Community for New Stem Cell Registry Challenge

The Peterborough Petes and Oshawa Generals rivalry continues with a stem cell registry challenge and both teams are asking the community for volunteers.

The “Be a Hero” challenge encourages Peterborough and Oshawa to sign up for the stem cell registry list through Canadian Blood Services (CBS) as a challenge to see what fanbase can get more registrants.

The challenge is a partnership between the Petes, CBS and Hockey Gives Blood and runs from Mar. 15-31.

The goal is to get at least 1,000 volunteers (ages 18-35) on the list. This challenge provides a new outlet to compete against Oshawa with no Ontario Hockey League season.

“With not being able to play this season, we thought we’d reignite the on-ice rivalry off ice and do some community involvement as well,” said Morgan Blaind, Major Events and Game Operations.

The winning team will be announced on Apr. 2 at 10:00 a.m. The losing team’s mascot will wear the winning team’s jersey with a photo posted across each team’s social media accounts. 

The Petes will host a blood drive with the Peterborough Donor Clinic on Tuesday, Mar. 30 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can register an appointment through the Petes Blood Drive through CBS’s website and their office is located at 55 George St N.

All fans who participate in the Petes Blood Drive will receive a Hockey Gives Blood swag bag and will have the opportunity to participate in digital Petes trivia during their appointment for a chance to win additional prizes.

Donate Blood To Carry On Dr. Andrew Chan’s Legacy

Dr. Andrew Chan was a well-respected member of the Peterborough community for nearly 20 years. Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Chan began his education and career in England. He soon relocated to Canada and began his education in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

 

After completing his education, Dr. Chan moved to Peterborough and joined the Medical Centre as a gastroenterologist in 1996.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Chan became known as a great leader. He stayed current in his field while investigating innovative medical technologies, was constantly pushing to improve patient care, but never lost sight of the importance of bedside manner. In honour of Dr. Chan’s contributions to his patients and this community, the Peterborough branch of Canadian Blood Services is holding a blood drive in his memory.
