Peterborough Cadets Will Celebrate Cadet Week With Tagging Weekend And Recruitment Day

As of this year, the first week in October has been proclaimed Ontario Cadets Week, the 2672 Hastings and Prince Edward County Army Cadet Corp. will spend this week tagging and recruiting new members.

The 2672 Hastings and Prince Edward County Army Cadet Corp is a free program open to youth aged 12-19.

According to Executive Chair Elizabeth Rodney, youth in this program will learn respect and discipline while gaining valuable, fun experiences they may not otherwise get.

Every Tuesday from 6:30 - 9 p.m. the group meets for training. Depending on the week they will focus on leadership courses, military history, orienteering, range team or music to name a few.

Outside of regular training, members will have opportunities to go on trips that vary each year.

According to Rodney, every year the group will go on a camping trip that will teach camping, cooking, shelter, survival skills. Members are also invited to compete in sporting events and band.

Every few years the group organizes a completely free trip for members.

Recently, before COVID, the group was able to travel to Myrtle Beach where they stayed on a Naval Base. They explored military ships, participated in submarine training and a submarine simulation.

In the past they have also traveled to Washington D.C where they were given access to tours that most members of the public wouldn’t be able to see. They visited Arlington Cemetery, the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier, government buildings and many museums.

“Cadets is made up of all demographics, military kids, non-military kids, its inclusive,” said Rodney. “It’s open to everyone, it doesn’t matter if you have money or if you don’t.”

Registration for Cadets can be done in person, on Tuesday nights at 6:30 at the Peterborough Armories.

Oh! You Pretty Things! The Bowie Lives: A Bowie Spectacular Returns To Market Hall

The Bowie Lives: A Bowie Spectacular is returning to Market Hall after performing to a sold out crowd in January 2020.

Michael Bell, an award-winning vocalist, will channel the sound and styles of David Bowie with the help of an all-star band, theatre and costumes.

While the music may be enough to transport the crowd to a true Ziggy performance, those in attendance are invited to arrive in costume.

From Ziggy Stardust to Halloween Jack - any and all personas that Bowie portrayed throughout his career are welcomed.

Bell says his tribute shows attract fans young and old that want to witness the eclectic style that is Bowie.

At each concert, Bell says the band makes a point to invite local musicians to open the show. On Saturday local artists S.J Riley and Marsala Lukianchuk will begin the night with their own rendition of an iconic Bowie song and open the show.

Tickets for Saturday nights show are still available online.

Having recently opened a second location, EarSense is now ready to serve patients on Lansdowne Street West, and continue serving clients at their East City location.

“We are so happy to be here in Peterborough,” said Keith. “This location will mean that we can reach more of our patients, and make it easier for them to get to us.”

Keith will spend her time between both locations, as will Stephen Ward, a board certified Hearing Instrument Specialist.

Together they strive to provide their clients with compassionate care and the knowledge they need to maintain healthy hearing.

EarSense can provide patients with audiologic assessments for all ages including pediatric care, hearing aid prescription, fitting, service and repairs. Counseling, tinnitus therapy, industrial testing, ear wax removal, custom ear protection (Industrial, Noise, Music), battery sales, assistive listening devices (TV, Phone, Alarms) and home visits.

Their new location features state of the art equipment that, with Keith and Ward’s experience and knowledge, will offer clients the best treatment possible.

“Once a person takes action to address hearing loss they sometimes have to decide to invest in hearing aids, which can be quite a costly thing sometimes,” said Keith. “Our goal is to make sure they are delighted with that investment - because it’s an investment of their time and their money.”

EarSense’s new location is located at 999 Lansdowne St. W.

Canada Declares September 19 As Federal Holiday To Mark Queens Funeral Ontario To Recognize It With Day Of Mourning

Justin Trudeau has announced a federal holiday to mark the Queen’s funeral on Sept. 19.

In his address to the public, Trudeau noted that he is talking with provinces and territories about joining the holiday.

On Tuesday afternoon Doug Ford announced that Ontario will recognize the day as a ‘Provincial Day of Mourning’ rather than a provincial holiday. This means that in Ontario only federal government employees will get that day off.

If other provinces and territories join, that means Monday will be declared a statutory (paid) holiday.

It is unknown when other provinces and territories will make announcements.

According to Iftikhar, about 20 people joined her on Saturday night to sleep outside at the Peterborough Lions Club, while 10 people participated from home - sleeping in their own yards.

Saturday was damp, a bit cold and not much sleep actually happened says Iftikhar - though she noted that they were in a safe, enclosed space which is already more than those sleeping rough in Peterborough have.

Iftikhar hosted this event in hopes to raise awareness of the challenges homeless youth face, while fundraising for YES and KSAC.

The night began with a ‘round table talk’ with speakers from YES and KSAC attending to share information on the housing crisis in Peterborough and it’s relation to human trafficking.

“I think everyone waked away with a better understanding of the challenges that these people face daily,” she said.

To date Iftikhar has raised $2,000, which will be split between YES and KSAC. The GoFundMe will be open for the rest of the week for those interested in donating.

Smile Cookie Campaign To Benefit Community Care Peterborough

Community Care Peterborough (CCP) has been selected by local Tim Hortons restaurant owners to receive proceeds from this year’s Smile Cookie Campaign at their Peterborough, Lakefield, Bridgenorth, and Curve Lake locations.

File Photo.

This year, the annual Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign runs from Sept. 19-25 in participating restaurants across Canada.

Locally, when customers purchase a chocolate chunk Smile Cookie for $1 plus applicable taxes, the local Tim Hortons Restaurant Owner will donate the full $1 to Community Care Peterborough’s Give A Meal, Give A Drive initiative.

“Although we have many clients who do not struggle – we have an increasing number who do. Many more seniors and adults with disabilities are making difficult choices about cutting food costs or missing medical appointments to reduce travel costs in order to remain in their home,” said Alicia Vandine – Donor Relations and Communications Lead.  “To assist these clients, we created the Give A Meal and Give A Drive subsidy programs. These subsidy programs allow seniors and adults with disabilities to access these services for free or at a reduced rate depending on their financial circumstance. It also allows us to help us subsidize the costs related to these programs so that we also have affordable options for those clients who can pay for them on their own.”

The Smile Cookie campaign began in 1996 as a way to help raise funds for the Hamilton Children’s Hospital in Ontario, and has grown to become a major fundraising event at Tim Hortons Restaurants.    Last year, Tim Hortons sold a record-breaking number of cookies across Canada over $12 million and locally almost $70,000.

“We are so honoured to be selected this year.  We are encouraging the public to visit their local Tim Hortons during the campaign week to purchase a Smile Cookie to help support us,” said Danielle Belair - Executive Director of CCP.  “This is such an amazing opportunity for us to help raise awareness about our other programs and services too.”

Members of the public can also pre-order cookies.  Visit CCP’s website, www.commcareptbo.org/smilecookies2022 to download a pre-order form that can be dropped off at local Tim Hortons restaurant or to order a box of 12, the public can use CCP’s online ordering form at pick them up at local locations too.

“We would also like to extend our thanks to all our local owners for selecting us as this year’s recipient.  Our staff and volunteer team will be working closely with members of their teams to set a Smile Cookie sales record in the City and County of Peterborough because all those $1 purchases add up quickly.”
