Cutting Cheese And Ribbons: The Cheesy Fromage Opens Up Shop In Lakefield

The Cheesy Fromage, sellers of Canadian cheese, wines, fine foods, has opened up shop in Lakefield and is the newest members of the Peterborough and The Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce.

Tanya Bailey and her daughter took a girls trip to New Orleans and visited what they thought was a a cheese shop. When they entered the shop they noticed people sitting, enjoying gourmet cheese and sipping wine and Bailey started conjuring up her own ideas.

“I just thought it was such a simple but brilliant idea,” she said. “I thought one day I wanted to do that, I wanted to bring that back to have something like that here.”

While Bailey has never been a professional in the food industry, she says it has always been something she loved to do.

In the past she could often be found making large meals for family gatherings or volunteering her tie and culinary skills at events.

The Cheesy Fromage officially opened in early July but Thursday marked their grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony with the chamber of commerce.

The Cheesy Fromage offers both sit-down dining and take out.

They can craft a charcuterie board for customers or customers can shop the variety of cheeses and other products to make their own at home.

They also carry a variety of local, handmade sauces, jellies, jams and other products.

Selwyn Township Receives $750,000 To Renovate Upper Level Of Former Lakefield post Office

The Township of Selwyn has been approved for up to $750,000 through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF), to retrofit the former Lakefield post office to create an accessible and comfortable upper-level community space.

The CCRF is delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) and provides funding for projects that aim to revitalize downtown cores and main streets, reinvent outdoor spaces, create green infrastructure and increase the accessibility of community spaces.

Selwyn applied for this funding to retrofit the former Lakefield post office, which currently houses the Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and Police Services, to create an accessible and comfortable upper-level community space.

According to the Township, this space has been under-utilized and is in need of accessibility upgrades and repairs, due in part to its age. This project includes the installation of an elevator/lift, construction of an accessible washroom and kitchenette, office/work stations, and board/meeting room, making this the perfect location for a community space that can be used by everyone.

“We are very excited to announce this project to the community of Selwyn Township. Not only will we be creating a space that is accessible to everyone, while preserving the heritage features of this historic landmark; but we are also creating a space that will benefit so many in our community,” said Andy Mitchell, Mayor of Selwyn Township. “From those who are taking their first steps in the world of entrepreneurship or those who are just looking for a quiet space to work. A space that will encourage learning, growth, and collaboration.”

Christmas at the Marshland Centre Returns With Hand Picked Artists After a Year Off

The 15th Annual Christmas at the Marshland Centre show will be returning to Lakefield the weekend of November 13 and 14, 2021.

Art featured at the 2019 event. Photo courtesy of Christmas at the Marshland.

The annual show and sale event was not held last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

There will be approximately 20 local artisans taking part, showcasing and selling creations like gourd art, pottery, paintings, wood turning, jewellery, woven items, silk scarves, knitted socks, felting and paper art.

Ceramics artist Mary Sullivan has been part of the show for the past four years. She makes beautiful hand made functional pieces with stoneware clay. Her pieces feature whimsical characters designed to make you smile. She says that the excellent quality of the art that is for sale at the Marshland Centre makes this event very special.

“The show has a limit on how much of one type of art is shown and that makes for a much more varied event,” she said. “It is in a beautiful location and it is laid out like a gallery with everyone’s work complementing each other’s throughout the room.”

Christmas at the Marshland Centre will be held at the Marshland Centre at 64 Hague Blvd. in Lakefield and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14.

Due to COVID masks must be worn at all times and there will be restrictions on the number of people allowed inside to allow for social distancing.
