Peterborough Transit Making Service Changes Amid Challenges Starting Oct. 30

Peterborough Transit increasing the use of On Demand Transit Service in off-peak hours, trip time adjustments and reducing some community bus services starting on Oct. 30.

The changes are to help ensure consistent, reliable transit service while the service continues to deal with high rates of absenteeism and the challenging labour market according to the City of Peterborough. Those factors have contributed to the need to regularly cancel scheduled trips on routes.

On Demand Transit uses smart technology to move around the city, adjusting the bus route based on where customers are leaving from and where they need to get to.

It was a pilot program in a limited area of the City since March 30 and during Saturday evening service from 8 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Beginning Oct. 30, On Demand Transit will replace some fixed routes throughout the City in off-peak hours to better serve customers.

Customers can download the PTBOnDemand app for their smartphones or tablets and create an account or call Peterborough Transit at 705-745-5801 to book a same-day trip.

When a customer requests a trip,  the system will look for the next trip available based on the customer’s trip pick-up and drop-off locations and number of people travelling together according to the City of Peterborough.

Customers who book their trip using the PTBOnDemand app are able to track the real-time location of the vehicle including information on when they will be picked up and dropped off.

Please visit the Peterborough Transit website www.peterborough.ca/OnDemand for additional details about PTBOnDemand.

Customers with questions on the route schedules can contact Peterborough Transit directly by phone at 705-745-0525 or by email at transitoperations@peterborough.ca.

Transportation Tomorrow Survey Letters To Be Mailed To Selected Peterborough Households

Peterborough households are asked to participate in the Transportation Tomorrow Survey this fall regarding the travel habits and preferences of residents in the Greater Golden Horseshoe and surrounding areas.

Randomly-selected households will receive an invitation letter that will provide them with a secure access code and more information about the survey.

Results will help local and regional governments, as well as the province and transit agencies, make transportation planning and investment decisions.

The Transportation Tomorrow Survey is jointly undertaken by 25 funding agencies, including the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), Metrolinx, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and municipalities across the study area.

Canadian-based research firm R.A. Malatest and Associates Ltd. will conduct the survey on behalf of the participating agencies including the City of Peterborough. The survey has been administered every five years since 1986.

“The Travel Tomorrow Survey data provides City planners information about existing travel patterns and helps plan for future mobility needs for the City,” said Vinod Soman, City of Peterborough senior transportation project manager. “We encourage residents to participate in the survey.”

Survey questions will focus on trip information for each household member including origin, destination, time, reason for travel, mode of transportation and some basic demographic questions.

Residents that did not make any trips can still participate in the survey, and all survey responses will remain anonymous.

The study runs from the fall of 2022 until spring of 2023 and the results will be released in 2024.

Participation in the survey is voluntary, and households can participate by accessing the project website at TTS2022.ca or by calling the survey hotline at 1-877-216-7786.

New Transit Garage Approved For Former Canoe Museum Site

Peterborough City Council approved selecting 910 Monaghan Rd./575 Romaine St. as the planned future location for a new Transit Garage at Monday nights council meeting.

Before this decision was made, the city was considering two locations for the future transit garage; 910 Monaghan Rd./575 Romaine St. (the current location of the Canadian Canoe Museum, which will be relocating to a new building it is constructing on Ashburnham Drive next to Little Lake), and 420 Ashburnham Dr., which is a property already owned by the City on Ashburnham Drive south of Neal Drive.

Peterborough Transit has outgrown its outdated bus garage facility on Townsend Street. The current storage garage is only able to accommodate indoor parking for 42 conventional buses out of the current fleet of 55 buses, meaning some are left outside at night.

The current transit garage lacks modern service areas for washing, fueling, interior cleaning, cash handling, and minor repairs which results in inefficient processes and higher costs to maintain the fleet.

The bus maintenance facilities and equipment are outdated and approaching the end of their service life, as are the existing building systems for heating, plumbing, security, and lighting.

Indoor parking of transit buses is critical to preserving the life of the vehicles. With outdoor parking, especially in winter, vehicles cannot be properly washed and cleaned at the end of a shift, as the interior surfaces and advanced accessibility features (kneeling buses and accessible ramps) are subject to freezing during the winter. As well, it is difficult and potentially unsafe to undertake minor repairs to buses in poor weather conditions when parked outside. The inability to properly service and maintain buses reduces the life expectancy of the asset and increases longer term maintenance costs.

Outdoor storage also results in the need for excessive idling of buses on cold winter nights and upon start up in the morning to allow them sufficient time to properly warm up prior to being introduced into service for morning runs, increasing emissions.

Construction and site preparation costs for the new Transit Garage are eligible for reimbursement under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) - Transit Stream with the Federal Government funding a 40% share and the Provincial Government Funding a 33.3% share. As of May 2022, the City still has approximately $50.9 million out of its total allocation of $57.2 million in Federal and Provincial ICIP funding that has not yet been committed.

The City portion of project costs to support construction will be included in future capital budget requests, along with detailed recommendations on the sources of funding.

The construction of the new Transit Garage is estimated to cost between $47 million and $53,165,100 depending on the final site approved by Council.
