Pete Dalliday Hits the Kitchen For An Episode Taping of Cooking Show 'Questionable Taste'

Media personality, sports broadcaster and PTBOCanada’s own Pete Dalliday put on the chef’s apron for his guest appearance at the local cooking show ‘Questionable Taste’ with host Ray Galletti to air this week on Bell Fibe TV1 and the Bell Fibe TV app.

The show is based in Peterborough and has Galletti —despite not being a chef — cook with his celebrity friends. They create the guest’s favourite dish using local ingredients while chatting and perhaps a few laughs along the way.

“I was an absolute blast to work with Ray and be asked to take part,” explained Dalliday. “I’ve never done a cooking show before so that was a first and a ton of fun. Ray and I hit it off and have become friends. I may have even converted him into a Halifax Thunderbirds lacrosse fan after he came to one of our games this year.”

Dalliday and Galletti created Italian bread and cheese balls known as ‘pallottes’ which the former traditionally eats on Good Friday.

“It’s an old Giardino family recipe that I was proud to bring to the kitchen that day,” said Dalliday.

The show is co-directed by Peterborough’s Chad Maker and Kirk Comrie. Michael Hurcomb — who also is a Peterborough native — filmed the show.

Dalliday’s episode is listed as the second of season two of five listed tapings. The Peterborough Petes/Lakers play-by-play announcer shares sports stories, his father Gary Dalliday and growing up in Peterborough throughout the episode.

The show's first season had six episodes that had features such as Shantilly’s Place owner Shantelle Bisson on Chandos Lake and Sweet Beast Butcher Shop’s Grant Slavin.

Lakefield Farmers’ Market Canada Day Celebration To Be Held June 29

The Lakefield Farmers’ Market, located behind the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre, is celebrating Canada Day on Thursday, June 29.

Market staff will be handing out small Canadian flags, temporary maple leaf tattoos, and Canadian themed colouring sheets. Lakefield Youth Unlimited will also be on hand with children activities.

Market vendors will have everything needed for Canada Day celebrations; fresh produce for salads, local meat for the BBQ, delicious baking, local craft beer, VQA wines and much more.

The Lakefield Farmers’ Market runs every Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine from Victoria Day until Thanksgiving. The Farmers’ Market is located behind the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre, next to Isabel Morris Park along the Otonabee River, and just steps from the Lakefield Marina and the Lakefield Trail.

Photos: Opa! Greek Festival Booms After Three-Year Hiatus With Dance and Traditional Cuisine

Over 2,000 people came and went at the return of the Greek Festival from a three-year hiatus, held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday. Traditional Greek favourite meals such as souvlaki, gyros, baklava and Greek salad were served at the event. Dancing, a kids’ fun zone and live entertainment were the amenities offered during the festival.

Get a Taste of Greece at the Greek Festival This Sunday After a Three-Year Hiatus

Souvlaki, baklava and gyro wraps are going to be at this year’s Greek Festival to raise money for the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for this Sunday running from noon to 7 p.m.

Souvlaki —both pork and chicken —, tzatziki sauce, Greek salad, rice, gyros and pita will be some of the foods featured and available for the event. Greek music will be played throughout the event and Greek dancers from the Toronto-area will provide free, live entertainment around 2 p.m. Several Greeks in the restaurant business in Peterborough are involved in running the festival according to Sophie Spiridis, festival organizer.

“It's showing the people from Peterborough our culture and what we have to offer,” she said. “I know people love Greece, love Greek people and Greek food so it's (the festival) a way of doing that.”

The proceeds for the church will aid in paying off their well water system that was recently upgraded. It will also cover any renovations for the church that it will want to undergo in the near future.

“Next year, we will be celebrating 30 years of the building of our church so there are upgrades like any other church or any household,” explained Spiridis.

The event has not run since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After three days of a soft opening last Thursday to Saturday, The Vine has opened to the public as a ‘plant-forward’ pescatarian-friendly restaurant. It is located at the former Electric City Bread Company location at 165 Sherbrooke St.

The menu showcases salads, soups, sandwiches, entrées and pizza. A brunch menu that also incorporates eggs and dairy is available on Sundays. Pitchers of Gatorade and Kool-Aid and a tater-tot waffle are ‘hangover specials’ that are featured in the brunch.

Sixth Annual Kawartha Craft Beer Festival Returns to Del Crary Park After Three-Year Hiatus

The sixth annual Kawartha Craft Beer Festival returns to Del Crary Park after being shelved for three years for a one-day event being held this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The festival is an all-ages event for the first time. The event features 10 Ontario Craft Breweries, cideries, three local food vendors, games and live music throughout the day.

Tickets are available now online with the advanced ticket price of $15 plus tax and fees. That pricing ends Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with day-of tickets priced at $20 + tax and fees. Each ticket includes a wristband, branded beer mug and two drink tokens.

Several businesses and communities have come out in support of the Peterborough Petes as the team is in London to take on the Knights in Game Five of the OHL Championship.

The Downtown Business Improvement Area, Canadian Tire, City Hall, Angevaare Mazda, Anden Kitchen & Bath Centre, Whelan’s Flooring Centre, FreshCo., Aon Inc’s Royal Gardens among several others have dressed in Petes apparel to show their team spirit.

A Petes watch party is taking place at the Quaker Foods City Square rain or shine from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and is being nationally televised.

The Charlotte Street square will have a 16-foot mega screen that is live streaming the game. Face painting and a small vendors market with grab-and-go snacks such as popcorn, candy, mini pies and tacos) are amenities that are provided during the watch party.

The Beers Kept Flowing At the 100 Acre Brewing Company Grand Opening

Peterborough’s newest brewery 100 Acre Brewing Company has opened its doors and kicked off its grand opening on Friday morning.

Bentley Vass is the brewery’s CEO and has his sister Nichea and brother Colby Vass as partners in a family-fun business. Their father has lived on the property since he was a child. He has an ‘open-door policy’ for anyone to come at any time and share the experiences he had when growing up on the 100-acre spot.

“All those fun memories of playing around outside just kind of come back, it's great to see people bring their kids out, running around in the field and stuff like that,” explained Bentley. “It's reminiscent of the childhood that I had and that's what we wanted to share with everybody.”

It is located at 390 Ashburnham Dr. at a 100-acre homestead with the grand opening running for four days, ending on Monday. The location is considered an ideal spot for the business according to Bentley as it is a quick turn off Highway 115 for cottage-goers to take a break and enjoy a drink. It also gives a rural setting but remains close to Peterborough residents so that they don’t have to go far for a countryside setting.

“People are recognizing more now than ever how important getting outside and enjoying some fresh air is,” explained Bentley. “To be able to have this oasis — for lack of a better term —, where people can actually escape, spend time outside, enjoy the beautiful scenery enjoy the beautiful weather for mental health, it's just a no-brainer.”

100 Acres feature four beers brewed in-house that are available with each beverage named with a nature theme: Flight Path (table beer), White Tail (pilsner), Monarch (Saison) and Snapper (India Pale Ale). Their beer is described as being crafted using traditional styles while also being creative and experimental as nature intended according to their website.

Take-home cans are available for purchase or patrons can enjoy a draft beer on-site. The brewery is in its infant stages but will have pop-up kitchens from several local restaurants that serve food at their establishment.

Community Care Peterborough Moves Ahead with Meals To Go Cross Promotion

Off the heels of the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign, Community Care Peterborough is sold out of its Meals to Go lunches for the May 17 delivery in Peterborough but is still accepting orders for its delivery of this year’s Greek inspired menu on May 31.

This year’s Meals to Go menu is inspired by Councillor Don Vassiliadis and Dean Pappas to stop in to the Community Care Peterborough (CCP) office to offer their support for this important fundraiser.

$10 per person lunches delivered by Community Care’s Meals on Wheels volunteers to local businesses in Peterborough and Lakefield include:

A Greek salad made with romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, black olives, feta cheese and homemade Greek dressing; and

• A chicken tzatziki pita, made with diced chicken on a fresh pita with lettuce, cucumber, grape tomatoes, red onion, black olives, feta cheese and creamy tzatziki sauce; and

• Fresh fruit cup medley of cantaloupe, blueberries and grapes

There are vegetarian, gluten free and lactose free menu options also available upon request.   

On June 11 at noon to 7 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (406 Parkhill Road East), the Greek Festival of music, dancers and food will return after its Covid hiatus.

“Each delivery will receive a copy of the upcoming Greek Festival event poster,” said Alicia Vandine, donor relations and communications lead.  “It’s a great cross promotion to celebrate this year’s Greek inspired Meals to Go menu.  We are happy to help spread the word and encourage residents to attend this wonderful community based, cultural event on June 11th too.”
