Port Hope's Owen Beck Lends a Hand In Canada's 6-2 Win Over USA; Advance to Gold Medal Game
/Port Hope’s Owen Beck and Team Canada are headed to the gold medal game at the 2023 World Junior Championship after a 6-2 win over the United States at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax on Wednesday.
The Montréal Canadiens’ prospect recorded an assist — his first point of the tournament — on Brandt Clarke’s goal roughly halfway through the third period.
Beck made a cross-crease pass to Adam Fantilli after scooping up a loose puck on a defensive zone turnover from the USA. Fantilli’s shot was blocked but ended up in the hands of Clarke and Los Angeles Kings prospect to snipe it top shelf for the 5-2 lead.
Beck was a late call-up to the team on New Year’s Day after Colton Dach was out of the tournament due to an injury.
Beck was invited to the World Junior Selection Camp for Team Canada but did not make the final roster at the time.
The Peterborough-born forward did not register a point in Canada’s win over Slovakia in their 4-3 overtime thrilling win.
Canada faces Czechia on Thursday night for the gold medal. Czechia dealt Canada’s only tournament loss 5-2 on opening day (Boxing Day).

/Team Canada had a close call at the 2023 World Junior Championships (WJC) but they won in overtime against Slovakia, 4-3; Peterborough Petes’s Brennan Othmann got an assist in the winning effort.

The game eventually went into overtime with a 3-3 tie as Slovakia was able to overcome the two-goal deficit, midway through the third period.
Overtime saw magic from Bedard as he deked through the entire Slovenian team and scored for a 4-3 thrilling win.
“Connor is just something special,” explained Othmann. “He put on a show. Every game he put on a show in overtime and you get there on the ice, it’s nerve-wracking but it’s exciting. He can control those emotions better than anyone I know.”

Peterborough Pete Brennan Othmann Selected to Team Canada For 2023 World Junior Championships
/Peterborough Petes’s Brennan Othmann has made the final roster for Team Canada for the 2023 World Junior Championships (WJC) in Moncton and Halifax announced on Monday evening.
This is his second time representing Canada as he won a gold medal with the team on August 20 in overtime against Finland. The New York Ranger prospect recorded two goals and four assists for six points in six games in his first World Junior Championship. He has also represented Canada at the U18 and U17 levels, winning a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World U18 Hockey Championships.
“We’re really excited for Brennan,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager. “To represent Canada once at this event is a huge honour, to do it twice is an opportunity that not a lot of players get to experience.”
Othmann was acquired from the Flint Firebirds on Nov. 12 in exchange for Artem Guryev and three OHL Priority Selection picks. He joins Petes defenceman and Philadelphia Flyers prospect, Brian Zanetti who is representing Switzerland.
The Pickering-born forward becomes the third Pete to represent Canada at the WJC since 2010, along with Nick Ritchie in 2015 and Mason McTavish in 2022. The championships start on Dec. 26 with both Othmann and Zanetti in action for their respective countries.

Two Petes Have World Juniors Experience Cut Short Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases
/Peterborough Petes players Mason McTavish and Brian Zanetti have their International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Juniors tournament cut short due to COVID-19 announced Wednesday.
The confirmation came from Chris Peters, NHL draft and prospects analyst and TSN’s Bob MacKenzie in a Tweet.
The decision came after three games were forfeited due to positive COVID-19 tests within teams.
The United States conceded first to Switzerland after two positive results on Tuesday. Czechia followed suit with their matchup vs Finland on Wednesday with Russia shortly resigning their game against Slovakia hours later. Both Czechia and Russia had one positive case apiece.
Not that @chrismpeters needs his work checked, because he doesn’t, but I can confirm the 2022 WJC will be cancelled. Official statements and news conference to come. https://t.co/zAL6CVoJ7n
