National Youth Week Events in Peterborough From May 1 to 7

The City of Peterborough and community organizations are hosting National Youth Week from May 1 to 7.

National Youth Week is a movement that celebrates youth and their active participation in their community. Each year, the City’s Recreation and Parks Services Division partners with various organizations to host a wide range of activities for youth to promote National Youth Week and encourage youth participation in community programs. Events include a First Friday Art Crawl, an expedition to Jackson Park to learn about birds, create a needle-felted Baby Yoda and play drop-in sports.

The entire lineup of free events for youth 10 to 19 is available online.

Events will occur at various locations including the Peterborough Museum & Archives, the Peterborough Public Library, the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre, Jackson Park and Downtown Youth Space.

National Youth Week serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of providing youth with opportunities to lead, innovate and inspire according to Councillor Lesley Parnell, Community Services (Recreation and Parks, Fire Services, and Arenas) Portfolio Co-Chair.

“Beyond promoting activities for youth, it’s a time for us to reflect on how we, as a community, can better support the next generation to make Peterborough a more inclusive, vibrant and forward-thinking city,” she said. “Our City is committed to nurturing the dreams and capabilities of our young people.”

“Our youth play an essential role in social and cultural life of our city,” said Councillor Gary Baldwin. “Their insights and enthusiasm are the key to our community’s continued growth and prosperity.”

The City of Peterborough will host a variety of events for National Youth Week from May 1 to 7, in partnership with community organizations.

National Youth Week is a movement that celebrates youth and their active participation in their community. 

Free events for youth 10 to 19 years of age will be hosted at the Peterborough Museum and Archives, Peterborough Public Library, Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre and Downtown Youth Space. 

The exciting schedule is the result of collaboration with the New Canadian Centre, Artspace and City program areas. The Peterborough Youth Council played an important part organizing some of the events. 

“The pandemic and extensive use of electronics in our daily lives have had a dramatic impact on our face-to-face social interactions, physical activity, and mental health. Please join in all the fun that National Youth Week has to offer. Meet new friends, try new healthy activities, get involved in your community,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, Chair of the City’s Youth Commission.

City Celebrates National Youth Week With Free Events From May 1-7

National Youth Week events will be hosted throughout Peterborough during the week of May 1 to 7.

These events are organized in partnership between the City of Peterborough, Otonabee Conservation, Council for Persons with Disabilities, the New Canadians Centre, and the Camp Kawartha Pathway to Stewardship and Kinship, and open to youth between the ages of 13 and 19 years old

“This weeklong calendar of events is organized by young people in our community for the young people in our community,” said Councillor Kemi Akapo, chair of the City’s youth portfolio. “I’m proud of the Youth Council for their efforts putting this together. Along the way they gained new skills and built new relationships. National Youth Week is a win-win for our local youth.”

Events include a community clean up at Jacksons Park, free swim at the Wellness Centre, a food festival at the New Canadians Centre, a Murder Mystery at Peterborough Museum and Archives, and many more.

The 6th Annual National Youth Week 2013 In #Ptbo Includes Dodgeball Tourney

The 6th Annual National Youth Week takes place the first week of May to improve the lives of young people in Peterborough.

"These initiatives are aimed towards uniting all youth from across the City of Peterborough and showing them the value of youth's empowerment within the community and the voice that represents them," says Ricky McDougall, Chair of the Peterborough Youth Council. 

  • May 1st: The Bridge Youth Centre - 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. - Drop in for Games, Art and a Free Snack
  • May 2nd: Free Movie night at the Peterborough Library - 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Free Resume Workshop - 4:00-5:30 p.m. at Employment Planning and Counseling on Simcoe Street
  • May 3rd: Twoonie Swim - 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Peterborough Sports and Wellness Centre - $2.00 for youth ages 10 to 21
  • May 5th: FREE Youth Bike Repair Workshop at Community B!KE - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drop in to their shop at 336 Rubidge St. New parts will have a cost.
  • May 6th: Free Dodgeball Tournament - From 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. at the PCVS Gym
  • May 7th: Blue Sky - FREE - 3:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at Nicholl's Oval Park
