Peterborough had a good start as captain Johnathan Melee scored just 44 seconds into the game. They struck again as rookie Colin Fitzgerald added to the lead just two minutes in for the 2-0 lead. Late in the period, Brampton was able to get on the scoreboard to make it 2-1 after the first period.
The second had only one goal courtesy of Brampton’s Jakub Fibigr with less than four minutes left in the period for a 2-2 tie.
The Petes regained the lead just 86 into the period as Melee struck again for a 3-2 lead. At 7:48, Peterborough native and Steelhead Porter Martone tied the game with a wrister shot at close range on Petes goaltender Zach Bowen for a 3-3 tie. Brampton was on the attack later in the game as a point shot was blocked. The puck came loose and went to Lucas Karmiris’s stick and he buried it at point-blank range for the 4-3 lead, the first for the Steelheads of the night. They were able to hang on and defeat Peterborough to leave with the win.
Peterborough will get a rematch Friday night against Brampton as the second game of the home-and-home series at CAA Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
