Downtown Shoppers Donate $10,000 To Kawartha Food Share

A donation of $10,054.30 was presented to Kawartha Food Share on Wednesday (January 13th) thanks to the generosity of downtown shoppers.

The City of Peterborough’s parking division has partnered with the Downtown Business Improvement Area since 2003 to provide two hours of free parking downtown for the month of December. Starting in 2014, the free holiday parking initiative began earlier on Black Friday in late November. All money put into the parking meters during this time is donated to Kawartha Food Share.

This year, more than $10,000 was raised—and since the initiative began in 2003, downtown shoppers have donated nearly $100,000.

“We’ve had a wonderful holiday shopping season downtown as people appreciate the benefits of shopping local," says Terry Guiel, Executive Director of the DBIA. "It’s great to see the holiday season topped off with a significant donation to such a worthy cause that benefits so many in our community."
 
Kawartha Food Share currently assists more than 8,100 men, women and children every month through 37 member agencies. Last year, the warehouse distributed over 10 million dollars worth of food and emergency care needs.
