Darryl Lloyd Was Just 14 When He Died In Cycling Accident But His Impact Will Last Forever
/Darryl Lloyd was a participant in Big Brothers Big Sisters back in July of 2000 when he was matched with Keith Calderwood as his big brother (mentor).
Keith, a constable with the Peterborough Police Service, would accompany Darryl on regular outings whether it was fishing, baseball, hockey, cycling, or walking Darryl’s dog. Keith and Darryl had just begun to enjoy the sport of golf together as well. Most of their times together finished with a stop at Tim Hortons where Darryl would enjoy an iced cappuccino while talking with Keith about the everyday challenges of being a teenager and of growing up without a dad.
Tragically, in June of 2003, Darryl died on Chemong Road as a result of a cycling accident. He was just 14 years old. Through the relationship between Keith and Darryl, Big Brothers and Big Sisters introduced two people to one another and started a relationship that will live on in memories forever—and has had a lasting impact.
A memorial golf tournament in Darryl’s name will assist in bringing other “Bigs and Littles” together by raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters Peterborough. To support the Big Brothers Big Sisters through this important tournament, consider becoming a sponsor or enter a team for a great day of golf at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club on Thursday, August 18th.

Paul Rellinger On Relly On The Roof & This Amazing Community
/Relly On The Roof returns for a sixth year April 28th to 30th, again raising funds for Habitat For Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha under the Peterborough Cares fundraising umbrella.
At noon on Thursday, April 28th, Paul Rellinger (aka "Relly")—with the generous help of the Peterborough Fire Department—will be lifted onto the roof of The Brick (1200 Lansdowne St. W.). While Habitat For Humanity volunteers collect donations in the parking lot below, Relly will live atop The Brick until 5 p.m. on April 30th.
"Since I first took to the Brick roof in 2011, this event has reinforced something I was already well aware of—Peterborough residents always find a way to give something," Paul Rellinger tells PTBOCanada.
"We've raised thousands of dollars for Habitat For Humanity. Most of that has been in the form of loose change but it adds up in an awful hurry. Habitat For Humanity, through its partnerships, is able to make that money stretch to help fulfill its important mandate," Rellinger adds.
A highlight of the weekend will be a live music showcase outside The Brick on Saturday, April 30th starting at 1 p.m. Featured performers include Rick and Gailie Young, Jessie Morrissey and Adam Grills, Hilary Dumoulin, Missy Knott, Terry Guiel and Jan Schoute.
Dave Stanley, manager of The Brick, is volunteering his time and staff for Relly on the Roof. Also providing invaluable support is Sobeys, Canadian Tire, Boston Pizza, The Pizza Factory and Tim Hortons.
"I can't say enough about The Brick and its manager Dave Stanley," Rellinger tells PTBOCanada. "Also everyone at Habitat For Humanity and good friend Camille Parent, whose Peterborough Cares initiative gave birth to Relly On The Roof and remains its partner. It's going to be a great three days. I'm excited to get going."
We're excited to see the community get behind this again.

Rob has been growing out his locks since 2014, and has decided to cut it all off for a great cause—Five Counties Children's Centre in Peterborough, where each of his boys has received support.
A GoFundMe fundraising page has been launched and all the donations to get Rob to cut his hair will go to Five Counties Children's Centre, which helps kids with physical, communication and developmental problems.
Give what you can here for this great cause—the Fishers' goal is to raise $2,000 but let's raise way more than that—and spread the word on your social media channels.

Clothesline Is Opening a Retail Location In Peterborough
/The Canadian Diabetes Association operates the Clothesline campaign—which asks Canadians to consider donating gently used clothing, electronics and small household items to them that they're getting rid of.
"One hundred percent of net proceeds raised by Clothesline directly support the Canadian Diabetes Association and world-leading diabetes research, education and advocacy."
There are currently 13 red donation bins around the city to collect used clothing, but sometimes people use them as a dumping ground for everything they are trying to part with.
Instead of dropping large article items at the bins (which isn't their purpose), you will now be able to take them to the retail location at 638B The Kingsway (just West of the Parkway), where they will sell mostly large article items and other goods.
The Grand Opening will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 7th, and to kick off the retail location, they are having a themed sale "Christmas in August" where you can purchase an artificial Christmas tree for $5.
Clothesline will be open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 pm. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is cash-only during the initial opening until a debit machine is installed. Clothesline will hold items if prepaid, and will charge a $50 flat rate to deliver items within city limits. You can drop off items—which must be in good condition and sellable—or call Clothesline for pickup (see what Clothesline will pick up here). For futher info, call them at 705.741.2155.
You can follow Clothesline on Facebook and Twitter. Learn more about the program here.
