Registration Open For Third Annual GPHSF Charity Bonspiel

Registration is now open for the third annual Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation (GPHSF) Charity Bonspiel, held on Feb. 15 at the Peterborough Curling Club.

“We are really excited for our 3rd Bonspiel in partnership with Imprinted Apparel Store. This event continues to grow each year. The response remains incredibly positive. We have a great time putting it on and being part of this event” said Vince Bierworth, GPHSF executive director. “Funds raised from this event will continue our mission to broaden health equity and access to healthcare for the residents in Peterborough City and County as well as Hiawatha and Curve Lake First Nations.  Funds will support our partnership with the Peterborough Family Health Team, along with many other community organizations we work with.”

Registration is $300, with a $60 tax receipt. The day includes two games along with breakfast and lunch. There are $2,000 in prizes to be won provided by Imprinted Apparel Store and $500 in prizes provided by Goldline. Other activities such as trivia challenges, raffle draws, cornhole boards and many other opportunities to win prizes will be at the event.

Participants can register online. Only 24 teams are available. GPHSF notes that participants should have some experience with the game and their equipment. They will not be able to provide on-ice training for beginners.

Peterborough Petes Still Searching For First Win After 2-1 Shootout Loss to Niagara IceDogs

The Petes are still searching for their first win as they fell to the Central Division-leading Niagara IceDogs in a 2-1 shootout loss at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

The scoring did not start until the final minute of the first period. Ethan Czata was able to jam the puck, which was caught in Petes’ goaltender Zach Bowen’s pad, to make it 1-0 for Niagara.

Peterborough retaliated over halfway through the second period. The Petes intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and immediately had an odd-man rush. The puck was passed to Brennan Faulkner and he beat the IceDogs goalie short side for his first career OHL goal and a 1-1 tie.

With no goals in the third period and overtime, the game had to be decided on a shootout.

Peterborough Lakers Announce Pete Dalliday As New Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships

A familiar face is joining the Peterborough Lakers as Pete Dalliday becomes the team’s new Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, announced on Wednesday morning.

In this role, he will help expand the Lakers' footprint in the local sports landscape, Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) and across Ontario.

“We are excited to have Pete join our team in this capacity,” said Len Powers, Chairman of the Board. “His connection to the community and understanding of the Lakers' values make him a perfect fit as we strategically grow our presence and engage more deeply with our fans. Pete's enthusiasm will be key as we build the future of lacrosse here in Peterborough.”

Dalliday has been well-known for his game commentary on YourTV for the Lakers and Peterborough Petes and with local radio and TV.

According to a press release, with his extensive experience in broadcasting, Dalliday will help elevate the Lakers' marketing strategies, driving new sponsorship opportunities and increasing awareness of the sport throughout the region. The Lakers believe that his leadership in this new role will contribute to growing lacrosse in the area and beyond.

“I’d like to thank the board for this opportunity to help lead such an iconic franchise,” said Dalliday. “As someone who has always felt a deep connection to the Lakers—whether as a fan, former player, or from the booth—this role feels like a natural fit. Kinsmen Minor Football League Championship Set After Playoff Games

The Kinsmen Minor Football League (KMFL) has entered the postseason as it started its playoffs at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (TASS) over the weekend.

The action started with the Senior Roughriders eliminating the Argos 38-14. Hayden Phair scored two touchdowns for the Roughriders while Michael Porter, Ryan Donato and Royce Adderley added a single score. Kaden Curtis kicked four converts. Parker Vivian and Ethan Bebbington scored for the Argonauts, with Chase Rimes adding a kicked convert.

The first Junior game of the day had the Roughriders eliminating the TiCats 24-0. Jackson Buck led the scoring for the Roughriders with two touchdowns. Jacob Cahorn added a single score and kicked three converts.

The second Senior playoff saw the RedBlacks eliminate the TiCats 54-7. Brody Munnings led the scoring for the RedBlacks with four touchdowns. Danial Consiglio, Mason Desroche, Brock Hendren and Harley Rock each added single scores. Chase Coghill kicked three converts. Lukas Zoric scored the single touchdown for the TiCats, with Lucas Morissey adding a kicked convert.

The day's final game saw the Junior RedBlacks eliminate the TiCats 40-0. Easton Schenk scored two touchdowns and also kicked a convert. Carter Gray, Cody Laurant and Brycen James each found the endzone as well. Ronnie Hope and AJ Galloway each added two kicked converts.

The KMFL finals are set for this Saturday at TASS. The Roughriders and RedBlacks will battle in both divisions to capture the KMFL Championship.  Junior action kicks off at 10 a.m, followed by the Senior final at noon.

Peterborough Petes Remain Winless After Weekend Games

After ten games, the Peterborough Petes remain as the only team in the Ontario Hockey League without a win as they took losses from the Brantford Bulldogs and Oshawa Generals over the weekend.

The Petes picked up a point but suffered a 4-3 loss in a shootout to the Bulldogs at the Brantford Civic Centre on Saturday.

Liam Ladds scored his first career OHL goal while Ryder McIntyre and Chase Lefebvre each tallied a goal. Nico Addy, Grayden Strohack, Brennan Faulkner, Aiden Young, Caden Taylor and Francis Parish all had assists. Zach Bowen started his eighth game of the season, stopping 35 of 38 shots in the game.

Peterborough took their second weekend loss to the Generals, 7-5 at Tribute Communities Centre on Sunday night.

Aiden Young got his first career OHL hat trick, while Colin Fitzgerald scored and had an assist. Francis Parish had a night, scoring his first OHL goal. Martin Matejicek and Carson Cameron had two assists each, while Grayden Strohack, Nico Addy and Matthew Jenken also had helpers.

The Petes return home to take on the Niagara IceDogs for the Halloween Game at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Jamie Langenbrunner Becomes 10th Alumnus to be Honoured by Petes with Banner Raising; Peterborough Falls to Kingston 6-4

In a night honouring two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jamie Langenbrunner, the Peterborough Petes remain winless, falling 6-4 to the Kingston Frontenacs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Before the game, had a Banner Raising Ceremony for Langenbrunner, highlighting his time with the Petes and 18-year career in the NHL.

He is the 10th alumnus to be honoured by the Petes, with his banner joining the likes of Bob Gainey, Chris Pronger, Roger Neilson, Scotty Bowman, Dick Todd, Mickey Redmond, Steve Yzerman, Larry Murphy and Colin Campbell.

Langenbrunner was joined on the ice by the Petes Board of Directors, former Petes General Manager Jeff Twohey, Alumni with Distinction Bob Gainey and Dick Todd, as well as his family and former billets.

The Petes opened the scoring with a goal from defenceman Carson Cameron who corraled a loose puck in the offensive zone and ripped it past Kingston goaltender Mason Vaccari for a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the Frontenacs rung off two goals and took a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Thanks to Aiden Young on the power play, Peterborough struck early again in the second. He was able to tip his stick on the puck after a deflected shot and popped in the air before it came down and into the net for a tie game. But the period was a repeat of the last and Kingston scored another two goals for a 4-2 lead after two.

This time, Kingston struck first to further extend their lead. Both teams had alternated goals as Young scored his second of the same to make it 5-3. Kingston scored roughly seven minutes later and Nico Addy added a late tally with eight seconds in regulation but Kingston kept Peterborough winless for the 6-4 win.

Three Peterborough Petes Named to NHL Central Scouting Preliminary Players to Watch List

Peterborough Petes Carson Cameron, Caden Taylor and Aiden Young have made the NHL Central Scouting’s annual Preliminary Players to Watch List for the 2025 NHL Draft, announced on Wednesday.

Cameron, a 2007-born defenceman, was selected by the Petes in the first round, 13th overall, of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection out of the Central Ontario Wolves organization. He has appeared in 68 OHL games with the Petes, scoring five goals and adding 22 assists for 27 points. Last season, the Bobcaygeon native helped Canada White win Gold at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge in Charlottetown, PEI. Cameron received a ‘C’ rating in the Players to Watch list, indicating a potential fourth-fifth-round candidate in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Taylor, a 2007-born forward from Shanty Bay, Ont., was originally drafted by the Sudbury Wolves in the first round, ninth overall, in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection out of the Mississauga Senators U16s. He was acquired by the Petes from the Wolves on Jan. 9 in exchange for defenceman and former captain Donovan McCoy. In 67 OHL games between Wolves and Petes, Taylor has scored 15 goals and added 11 assists for 26 points. Taylor received a ‘C’ rating in the Players to Watch list, indicating a potential fourth-fifth-round candidate in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Young, a 2007-born forward from London, was selected by the Saginaw Spirit in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16s. He was acquired by the Petes along with three picks on Jan. 8, in exchange for Montreal Canadiens prospect Owen Beck. Through 67 OHL games between the Spirit and Petes, Young has scored three goals and added 12 assists for 15 points. Young received a ‘W’ rating in the Players to Watch list, indicating a potential sixth-seventh-round candidate in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The Petes are back in action on Thursday when they host the Kingston Frontenacs at 7:05 p.m. Before the game, the organization will honour alumnus and two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jamie Langenbrunner with a banner-raising ceremony. Langenbrunner will be in attendance to take part in the ceremony, which will feature speeches from dignitaries, a video tribute and banner-raising.

Peterborough's Porter Martone Selected to Team CHL for Prospects Challenge

Peterborough and hockey forward Porter Martone has been selected to participate in the inaugural CHL USA Prospects Challenge from Nov. 26 to 27.

Martone has been selected to Team CHL for the two-day event. The 2024 CHL USA Prospects Challenge debuts this season with top CHL prospects facing off against the United States under-18 team.

The former Mississauga Steelhead has 33 goals and 38 assists in 60 games this past Ontario Hockey League Season. In nine games with the now Brampton Steelheads, the Peterborough native has ten goals and ten assists in nine games.

In April, he captained Team Canada to a gold medal at the IIHF U18 World Championship in Finland.

The event will be held at Budweiser Gardens in London on the 26th and at Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa on the 27th.

Peterborough Petes Acquire Niagara IceDogs Captain For Two Draft Picks

The Peterborough Petes have acquired overage forward Gavin Bryant from the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for a third-round pick in 2026 (Guelph) and a ninth-round pick in 2028, announced on Tuesday morning.

The Ingersoll native was initially selected by the Owen Sound Attack in the second round, 37th overall, of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. Over three OHL seasons between the Attack and the Niagara IceDogs, he has played in 155 games, scoring 40 goals and adding 78 assists for 118 points. Last season, he led the IceDogs in scoring 54 points in 62 games while also serving as team captain.

“Gavin is a great fit for our group,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations. “He has been a leader on every team that he’s played for in this league. We know that he’ll be a big influence to our team both on and off the ice.” 

Bryant has worn a letter on both teams he played for in the OHL. In 2022-23, he served as an Assistant Captain with the Owen Sound Attack. After being acquired by the IceDogs from the Attack before the 2023-24 season, he was named an Assistant Captain with Niagara before becoming Captain in January.

The overage forward has also been known for his community work in the OHL. This season, Gavin and the IceDogs announced the launch of Gav’s Corner, a new initiative aimed at uniting and supporting individuals impacted by Type 1 Diabetes.

Peterborough U15 AAA Petes Undefeated to Capture BP Icefest Championship

The Peterborough Jesse’s Tap and Grill U15 AAA Petes reached the top of the mountain to become BP Icefest champions, defeating the Kitchener Jr. Rangers in overtime, 1-0, to cap off an undefeated run on Sunday night.

Their journey to the top started with routing Timmins 6-0 on Thursday.

In a close game, the Petes edged out the same Kitchener team 2-1 in overtime followed by a 5-0 win over Cambridge.

On Saturday, the Petes knocked off the Buffalo Regals 5-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

They faced off against Burlington and shut them out 4-0.

The Petes got the Grey Bruce Highlanders in the semifinals and posted another shutout, winning 1-0 over Grey Bruce on Sunday morning.

With little rest, the Petes capped off their undefeated tournament with a win over Kitchener, earning their fifth shutout of BP Icefest.

Goaltenders Landen White and Matty Colling were outstanding all weekend.

Rostered players were Prestin Allen, Blake Brioux, Tyson Hawley, Taymon Browne, Liam Williams, Kotter Grove, Reid Cameron, Lucas McIntyre, Cole Roberts, Cooper Poskin, Hannu Packalen, Colton Adams, Kalum Phillips, Gage Cooper-Bailey, Joe Gusso, Taytem Adams. Landen White and Matty Colling were the goalie tandem that helped Peterborough with five combined shutouts.

Head coach Joe Hawley led the team which was backed by assistant coaches Rob Baker, Dan Robertson, Brock Davis and Kevin Sparling. Trainer Lynn Todd and manager Ben Adams were also part of the winning Petes team.
