Peterborough County Beginning Phase Two Of James A. Gifford Causeway Construction This Week

Phase 2 encompasses vital repairs to the bridge portion.

“The County is pleased to inform residents and visitors that despite the ongoing construction, the bridge and the road will remain open throughout the project duration. While we expect delays, we anticipate delays may be reduced in comparison to previous phases as we remain committed to minimizing disruptions as much as possible,” according to a statement in a press release from the County.

Completion is expected by November.

County of Peterborough to Install 21 Multi-Use Path Lighting Poles At James A. Gifford Causeway On Tuesday

The County of Peterborough is installing 21 Multi-Use Path (MUP) lighting poles on the south side of the Causeway is scheduled for Tuesday (weather permitting) and will extend throughout the week.

Temporary lane restrictions will be in place with flagging operations during the installation.

The activation and verification of account status with Hydro One may delay the operational commencement of the MUP lighting illumination according to a press release.

Upon conclusion, Phase 1 (Road Works) of the Causeway construction project will be concluded.

“We will continue to provide updates as the project approaches its commencement,” according to a statement in a press release. “We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period.”

County of Peterborough Provides 2024 Construction Update of James A. Gifford Causeway

The County of Peterborough has updated the James A. Gifford Causeway construction plans.

The 2023 James A. Gifford Causeway roadworks tender was substantially completed in November 2023. The lighting installation along the new multi-use path is anticipated to be completed by mid-winter this year. 

The design of the next phase of Causeway construction is being finalized and will include extensive rehabilitation of the Chemong Bridge. The construction tender for this work is expected to be issued for public bidding in February.

The scope of the 2024 contract will also include a road reconstruction component, extending from west of Chemong Bridge to the Kelly Boulevard/Garthorne Avenue intersection.

The scope of the 2024 construction contract will include:

• Repairs to Chemong Bridge superstructure and substructure

• Excavation and replacement of deteriorated concrete deck sections

• Renewal of the asphalt surface on the bridge

• Approx. 400 metres of road surface repairs east and west of bridge

• Renewal of steel beam guiderail

• New 1.8m concrete sidewalk on the south side of Chemong Bridge

• Connection to new multi-use path and installation of pathway lighting

Construction is to commence in the spring with completion in November. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly and consider alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.

James A. Gifford Causeway to Reopen at Noon After Last Friday's Emergency Closing For Repairs

The James A. Gifford Causeway is reopening at noon after emergency repairs have been completed, announced on Friday morning.

Peterborough County announced last Friday that emergency repairs had to be done and had closed the Causeway for a week.

One lift of asphalt has been applied to the roadway however, intermittent lane closures are still occurring due to the remaining required work.

Lane closures and traffic flagging are in place until mid-November. Peterborough County says drivers should expect continued delays due to high traffic volumes.

“Peterborough County would like to thank the community for its understanding and patience during this emergency closure and the ongoing construction rehabilitation,” as stated in a press release.

Emergency Closing of James A. Gifford Causeway Closing at 7 p.m. On Friday For Emergency Repairs

Peterborough County has issued an emergency closing of the James A. Gifford Causeway to all traffic beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday for urgent unforeseen repairs.

This must be completed immediately to avoid a significant safety risk to the travelling public according to the County.

Crews are working extended hours to rectify the situation with expected reopening for next Friday.

Detours will be in place during the unexpected construction and repairs. 

“Peterborough County realizes that this unexpected situation is disruptive and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause,” as stated in a press release.

Engineers Say Damage To James A. Gifford Causeway Is Significant

Damage to County causeways from the wind storm of May 4th has been assessed by engineers, and County Council have approved repairs to both the James A. Gifford Causeway and the Gannon’s Narrows Causeway.

According to a county press release, staff are in the process of working with local approval authorities to coordinate the exact timing of the work so as not to disturb fish spawning habitat.

While the damage is significant from the storm, the public is advised that both causeways are safe to travel.

“County Council has made the decision to approve the recommended work on both causeways to ensure continued use of these important vehicular routes in the County,” says Warden Joe Taylor. “We will continue to ensure the public is made aware of the timing and status of the work in the coming weeks.”
