328 Paddlecraft Just Filled Both Tubs At Trent Severn National Historic Site In Epic Display

Last year, 138 paddlecraft were jammed into one of the ginormous "tubs" at the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site in Peterborough on Lock n' Paddle day, breaking the previous record of 101.

This year, Lock 'N Paddle upped their game even more, filling both tubs on a beautiful Saturday (June 24th) with more than 150 canoes and kayaks each (to mark Canada's 150 birthday) and lifting them 65 feet.

It was one heck of a jigsaw puzzle for organizers and Lockmaster Ed, seen in this video below...

And once the lock chambers were at an equal elevation, the Lock Master halted the lockage and participants and visitors raised their paddles and sang both O Canada and Happy Birthday in celebration of 150 years of Confederation.

EC3 And Artspace Bring Hunter Street Alive With Canada 150-Themed Video Art Productions

As part of Canada 150th celebrations in Peterborough, Electric City Culture Council (EC3) and Artspace will be turning Hunter St. into a stage for New Visions/Old Land, an art exhibition featuring four media art projects tucked into stores, office fronts, alleyways and tents.

To celebrate Canada’s 150th, EC3 and Artspace asked artists in Peterborough to reimagine what “Canada” means, to offer new visions of what the idea of Canada could or should be. Who are we? What does it mean to be Canadian? What is the role of the land and the landscape in shaping this definition? How can we trace an outline of the future in the fragments of the past? New Visions/Old Land is about recasting the past, inventing alternative futures.

EC3 coordinated the project and Artspace donated the equipment and facilities.

WHEN AND WHERE

On Friday, June 30th, Hunter Street between George and Alymer streets will be open to pedestrians only. Four artists have created original works in film or video that will be presented between George Street and Sam’s Deli running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Filmmaker and Trent University Professor Kelly Egan will curate the show. Each installation will have a live sound/music component.

Interested in making your own film? Come to the camera-less film production table, where you can scratch, paint, stamp, and draw directly on 16mm film.  Once the film is finished (and dried), watch your own creation projected live on Hunter Street. Learn about the history of moving images—and the differences between video and celluloid—through 16mm camera-less filmmaking. Participants of all ages are welcome, including children.

You Can Now Order Your Free Lockage Permit For 2017 On Trent Severn Waterway

Parks Canada has announced that boaters can now order their free lockage permits as part of Canada 150 celebrations, giving you an amazing chance to explore the Trent Severn Waterway and other waterways this year.

The free lockage permit for boaters is valid for the entire navigation season in 2017 and provides passage through Parks Canada’s historic canals like the Trent Severn.

Kim Mitchell To Celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday In Peterborough

Canadian rock icon Kim Mitchell will be celebrating Canada’s 150th right here in Peterborough with thousands of fans.

The Canada’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations Committee and Peterborough Musicfest announced that Mitchell will open the 2017 Musicfest season on Saturday, July 1st, 2017. As part of the Canada 150: Celebrate At Home initiative, Peterborough Musicfest will launch its 31st season by opening on July 1st.

“Peterborough Musicfest is incredibly proud to be a part of the weekend-long celebration of Canada’s 150th celebrations in the city,” says David Feeley, Peterborough Musicfest Board Chair. “The City of Peterborough and the people of our community have supported Musicfest for over 30 years and we look forward to being an anchor event for the festivities.”

The City of Peterborough is offering residents a great reason to Celebrate at Home and ring-in Canada’s 150th birthday in style during the Canada Day long weekend in July 2017. The Canada’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations Committee has been planning four days of celebrations running Thursday, June 29th to Sunday, July 2nd, 2017.

“There is something so quintessentially Canadian about celebrating this milestone with Kim Mitchell—his songs have been an anthem for so many Canadian summers,” says Mike Melnik, 150th Committee Chairman. “We believe Mitchell’s concert will be one of the many good reasons we’re giving local residents to circle the long weekend on the calendar and Celebrate at Home here in Peterborough.”

The committee will be working closely with established Canada Day events such as the Canada Day Parade and the New Canadians Centre Multicultural Festival, which already bring out the crowds by the thousands.

Special to the 150th milestone will be an extra three days of fanfare involving a partnership with the DBIA to host two days of local music and celebrations downtown, and a partnership with Parks Canada to host a day of free family-oriented events with a strong historical and cultural flair.

Over the winter months, the committee will be releasing details of these exciting events as they are confirmed.
