2023 is off to a nice start for the Peterborough Petes as they extended their win streak to five, defeating their rival Oshawa Generals on the road in a 6-1 win at the Tribute Communities Centre on Sunday.
Johnathan Melee opened the game’s scoring in the first period's final minute, redirecting a Konnor Smith pass for a 1-0 Petes lead into the second.
Connor Luckhardt took over the game for the Petes, scoring a natural hat trick in the second period. He rang off three straight goals in less than eight minutes to give Peterborough a commanding 4-0 lead. Generals’ Joseph Serpa scored on the power play to the deficit to 4-1 and broke the shutout into the third.
Melee tacked on his second of the game on a Chase Stillman rebound three minutes into the third. Tucker Robertson added insult to injury with a late-period goal as the Petes walked away with a 6-1 win to start the new year.
The Petes finish a three-game road trip in Hamilton to play the defending OHL-Champion Bulldogs on Tuesday with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
