City of Peterborough Marks One-Year Anniversary of Green Bin Program

The City of Peterborough’s Green Bin program for curbside collection of household organic waste marked its first anniversary Thursday.

Over 28,000 households participated in the waste diversion service.

In the past year, more than 6,000 tonnes of organics have been diverted from the City-County landfill, resulting in an overall waste diversion rate of 76 per cent.

“The Green Bin program is a critical way for our municipality to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and divert waste from the landfill, helping to extend its life,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “I thank Peterborough residents who have overwhelmingly adopted this program over the past year: your dedication has made it a success. By effectively sorting organic waste, including removing food packaging and plastics, our residents can ensure that our composting facility is producing a high-quality end product.”

To mark the anniversary of the service, the City is celebrating its success and sharing information on the need to continue being diligent about what gets put into the Green Bin to protect the compost created through the process.

Organic material is processed into compost through a series of steps, from weigh-in and mixing to the climate-controlled GORE bunkers to final screening at the organic waste processing facility on Bensfort Road.

Future phases of the program are expected to consider expanding service to include multi-residential and commercial participants.

The site operator manages the compost produced at the facility. Between May 1 and Nov. 30, a portion of compost is available to residents for purchase at the City-County Landfill. The City’s Environmental Services division also coordinates compost donations to the City’s community gardens.

This project received $6.1 million in funding through the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Fund.

Green Bin sorting tips

  • Remove any packaging or wrappers from food before disposal. Coffee pods may commonly be labelled as compostable, but cannot be processed at our facility.

  • Only certified compostable/BPI bags are accepted – products that are labelled biodegradable may not be processed by our facility

  • Yard waste which includes leaves and brush should be sorted separately for weekly pickup, April through November.

City of Peterborough to Remove Temporary Downtown Patio Starting Oct. 29

The City of Peterborough is removing the temporary downtown patios to prepare sidewalks and roads for winter snow-clearing operations starting on Oct. 29.

Restaurants and other businesses that have temporary patios on sidewalks and in on-street parking next to their businesses will remove their patio furniture by the end of the day on Oct. 28 to clear the way for the removal of the fencing and large planters starting the next day.

The expanded patio spaces were installed in May.

With the expanded patio areas removed, Hunter Street West between George Street North and Aylmer Street will return to a two-lane, two-way street. During the summer, that section of Hunter Street was temporarily made into a one-lane, westbound, one-way street to add more patio and pedestrian space in the café district.

“This was the fifth summer for the central area patio program, enhancing public space in the heart of the City. We thank local restaurants, cafes and businesses who work with the City to create a welcoming experience for visitors in the downtown, bringing the community together throughout the summer season,” said Town Ward Councillor Alex Bierk and Councillor Joy Lachica in a joint statement.

“The downtown patio program has once again created an inviting and animated atmosphere to our urban core, transforming our streets into lively, welcoming spaces for both residents and visitors to enjoy." said Nour Mazloum, Downtown Business Improvement Area executive director. “As the season wraps up, we want to thank our partners at the City of Peterborough for this incredible initiative that not only supports local businesses but also greatly contributes to making downtown Peterborough a vibrant destination in the summer season.”

Peterborough County Hubs Program Expands

The Peterborough County Hubs Program is now offering drop-in services in Millbrook, Havelock, Apsley and Norwood.

The new drop-in service, which started on Tuesday, gives rural residents access to supports related to health care, mental health, addictions, employment, developmental services, housing, income, senior services and more within their home community.

"The expansion of the Peterborough County Hubs Program is an important step in ensuring that all Peterborough City-County residents, no matter where they live, have easy access to the services and supports they need, said Peterborough city councillor Alex Bierk. “By bringing these services closer to home, we are removing barriers for communities across the region and making sure that residents can get help with everything from health care to employment services.”

The drop-in program has opened new hubs in several locations:

  • Millbrook Hub at Old Millbrook School - open Tuesdays 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

  • Havelock Hub at Havelock Community Care office - open Wednesdays 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

  • Apsley Hub at Apsley Community Care office - open first and third Wednesday of each month 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

  • Norwood Hub at Asphodel-Norwood Township Office - open Thursdays 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The program is a collaboration between the City/County Social Services administered by the City of Peterborough, Canopy Support Services, Canadian Mental Health Association - Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge and Fleming CREW and Academic Upgrading.

A staff person from of the agencies will be at the hubs when the open for drop-in service.

The program builds on the existing Peterborough County Hubs Program that has nine locations across the county in Keene, Warsaw, Douro, Buckhorn, Lakefield, Millbrook, Havelock, Apsley and Norwood.

“Last year, I was proud to be at the launch of the eight Peterborough County Hubs which provided bookable space for social service providers to meet with clients,” said warden Bonnie Clark. “Local clients will now have the convenience to drop-in during office hours and not have to book an appointment. This pilot project brings social services access for our rural and small urban communities closer to parity with larger urban centres.”
