Special Hockey International Tournament In Peterborough Raises $8,400 for Local Teams

At a press conference on Tuesday (June 13th) at the Memorial Centre—home of the Peterborough Petes— Special Hockey International (SHI) tournament chair David Smith announced that the event generated $8,400 which would be donated to the two local special hockey programs.

Chris Williams from the Electric City Maroon & White and David and Carol Fisher from the Kawartha Komets were on hand to accept donations of $4,200 each for their respective organizations.

The 2017 SHI Tournament took place in Peterborough from March 15th to 18th, with 55 special hockey teams comprised of 1,041 athletes and 4,050 total visitors making Peterborough and the surrounding area home throughout the event. Participating teams travelled from as far as Sweden.
 
"With all of the challenges that our special needs community face on a daily basis, once again they have proven that the only barriers to success are the barriers that we place upon ourselves,” says Smith. “Starting with the lowest point back in November and culminating with the high of today's announcement, I have been blessed to be part of this team and I am truly inspired by the tenacity and the never-give-up attitude that exists within our community."

Petes President Dave Pogue also spoke at the press conference, noting that “an event of this magnitude could not have been put on without the support of the community. Dave Smith and his volunteers should be proud of their hard work, and organizations throughout Peterborough must be applauded for committing their resources to such an important event.”
