PTBOCanada Featured Post: FastStart's Awesome Kawartha Backcountry Entrepreneurship Experience

Listen up young entrepreneurs: One of last summer’s most successful educational/entertaining events is on the horizon and you need to go. It's going to be bigger and better than ever! So pay attention.

The Kawartha Backcountry Entrepreneurship Experience is an action packed weekend opportunity brought to you by FastStart Peterborough—a youth entrepreneurship program in collaboration with Trent University, Fleming College, and the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster. It’s open to all aspiring and current entrepreneurs who want to learn about starting their own business or further develop their skills.

The 3-day Backcountry Entrepreneurship Experience—a transformative entrepreneurship experience—offers an opportunity for Peterborough youth to immerse themselves in the world of entrepreneurship in an incredibly random and off-the-grid kind of way.

Like last year, there is a Quick Checklist of Q's:

-> Does the thought of working a 9 to 5 job give you nightmares?
-> Are you more of a creative free thinker with dreams of setting off on your own?
-> What are the chances that you’re between 18 and 29 as you read this?
-> Do you have plans from August 26th to 28th?

If you answered “yes” to all 4 of these questions, or know someone who would, take this information seriously and don’t sit on it. There is an application process that we’ll explain more about below. Also, you’ll want to either scrap your plans that weekend or rearrange some dates. (That wedding you were going to as a guest—it can be rescheduled right? They’ll understand;)

The 2015 Kawartha Backcountry team had a blast!

Last years’ experience was pretty awesome. A great group of people got together out in the wild and did some pretty amazing stuff. After an experience like this, there is an actual chance to make a better future for you in the weeks, months and years ahead.

Here is a quick rundown of what successful applicants can expect:

Day 1: The interactive classroom-style learning day begins at Fleming College and is essentially a gauntlet style learning opportunity entitled “Entrepreneurship 2.0: So you want to be an entrepreneur”. This day can accomodate up to 60 people.

Days 2 & 3: This is where the rubber hits the road. You will be devoted to a fun and competitive simulation that empowers teams to address entrepreneurial challenges and develop ideas for new business ventures in a “Kawartha Backcountry Competitive Advantage Challenge”. Combining canoeing, camping and numerous outdoor activities, the participants will put what they’ve learned on Day 1 to practice surviving in the wilderness while also implementing and operating their own enterprise.

Here is the really important detail you’ll want to remember: The deadline to submit applications is July 29, 2016. Don’t wait until the last minute. Work now, procrastinate later. The Entrepreneurship 2.0 session at Fleming College can accommodate up to 60 participants of all ages, while the Backcountry Experience is limited to only 20 youth between ages 18 and 29.

Tentative about leaving your comfort zone and missing Netflix for a night? Don’t be! The program is being presented in collaboration with the 2014 Bears’ Lair Entrepreneurship Competition Winner, The Land – Canadian Adventures. They know their stuff, so have no fear! And besides, Netflix will always be there.
