Last-Second Heroics Gives the Peterborough Petes a 4-3 Win Over the Ottawa 67's

The Peterborough Petes came through in the clutch as they scored in the dying seconds of the game to defeat the Ottawa 67’s 4-3, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The Petes were without head coach Rob Wilson who was serving a five-game suspension after a bench altercation from Sunday’s game against the Erie Otters.

Peterborough opened the scoring exactly five minutes into the game as Brody Partridge banged in a rebound off a loose puck for a 1-0 score. That remained the only goal of the period.

The Petes doubled their lead as Ottawa mishandled the puck in their own zone. Partridge corraled the loose puck, circled the net, fired and it was tipped by Brennan Faulker for a 2-0 lead just 28 seconds into the period. Ottawa answered two minutes later as Chris Barlas off a one-time to cut the deficit in half.

Early in the third, Ottawa looked to tie things up as they were on the power play but Petes captain Johnathan Melee had other ideas. He intercepted a pass in the offensive zone and rifled it top shelf from the high slot for a 3-1 lead. Ottawa would not go down easily as Barlas scored a second time, followed up by a Filip Ekberg goal with under six minutes in regulation to tie the game at three.

With just over 10 seconds left in regulation, the Petes were looking for one last push. They won a faceoff in their own zone where Aiden Young got the puck and passed it to Genc Ula at the point. He took a fadeaway wrist shot that managed to find its way through traffic. It found its back of the net for a 4-3 lead in the dying seconds of the game and the Petes escaped with a win.

Both teams meet again on Saturday, this time in the nation’s capital at TD Place at 3 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Fined $5,000 As Head Coach Gets Suspended Five Games After Bench Altercation Against Erie Otters

Peterborough Petes head coach Rob Wilson has been assessed a five-game suspension and a $5,000 after a bench altercation involving Erie Otters, announced on Thursday.

The incident occurred at the Erie Insurance Arena when the Petes lost 7-2 to the Otters on Sunday.

Just under halfway through the second period, Otters’ Alex Messier went to fight Petes’ Francis Parish during faceoff before the puck drop.

This resulted in Wilson and Kris Mallette, Otter's head coach, going face-to-face between the benches in a heated argument. They had to be separated by assistant coaches and referees.

The Ontario Hockey League also suspended Petes defenceman Grayden Strohack for four games (including a game misconduct) for being the third man into a fight (which results in an automatic two-game suspension). He also received another game misconduct for continuing an altercation.

Erie Otters Head Coach Kris Mallette has been assessed a five-game suspension, while Assistant Coach Ken Peroff has been suspended for two games. The Erie Otters Hockey Club has also been fined $7,500.

Messier has been suspended for nine games with infractions that included being assessed a game misconduct, aggressor and continuing an altercation. He also exceeded the regular season fighting major threshold during the incident which is an automatic two-game suspension.

The Petes return home to face the Ottawa 67’s on Big Brothers Big Sisters Night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Forward Named EOJHL Top Prospect For 2024-25

Peterborough Petes forward Dylan Turcotte has been named one to the top prospects of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL), announced on Tuesday.

As an Ottawa Junior Canadian, Turcotte finished with 28 goals and 33 assists for 61 points in 27 games during the 2024-25 campaign. He had a 2.26 points-per-game average which led all EOJHL skaters. Turcotte also had 18 multi-point games this season and has a 19-game point streak.

The Orleans native was originally selected by the Petes in the first round, third overall, of the 2024 OHL U18 Priority Selection.

He was called up to the team ahead of Saturday’s game against the Brantford Bulldogs in a 4-3 overtime losing effort.

Peterborough Drop Pair of Weekend Games; Petes and Otters Head Coach Ejected After Bench Altercation

It was a weekend to forget as the Peterborough Petes drop a pair of games to the Brantford Bulldogs and Erie Otters on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Peterborough first lost to the Bulldogs with a 4-3 overtime loss at the Brantford Civic Centre on Saturday night.

Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations, called up affiliate players Calum Hartnell, Kaiden Thatcher and Dylan Turcotte for the road trip against Brantford and Erie.

“With some suspensions and injuries to our team this weekend, we’ve called up Calum, Kaiden and Dylan to the Peterborough Petes,” he said. “We’ve been monitoring all three players very closely this year and they have all had strong seasons with their respective teams.”

Gavin Bryant had two assists in his 200th OHL career game. Martin Matejicek, Brennan Faulkner and Brady Stonehouse scored, while Petes goaltender Easton Rye would stop 34 of 38 shots.

The Petes crossed the border to play the Otters but had better days as they lost 7-2 at the Erie Insurance Arena on Sunday.

Matejicek scored his 12th goal of the season while Faulkner tacked on a goal. Quinton Pagé, Stonehouse and Aiden Young all had a helper in the game.

Just under halfway through the second period, Erie’s Alex Messier went after Peterborough’s Francis Parish for a fight at a faceoff but before the puck was even dropped.

This escalated as Rob Wilson, Petes head coach and Kris Mallette, Otters head coach went face-to-face between the benches in a heated argument. They had to be separated by assistant coaches and referees. Both coaches could face supplementary discipline.

Messier also got between the benches and tried to grab Wilson but Strohack quickly pushed his hands away. Wilson and Mallette were eventually ejected. Messier and Strohack were also thrown out.

The Petes return home to face the Ottawa 67’s on Big Brothers Big Sisters Night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Windsor Spitfires Dynamic Duo Proves Too Much For Peterborough Petes in 7-1 Rout

Windsor Spitfires Liam Greentree and Ilya Protas became menaces, combining for seven points to rout the Peterborough Petes, 7-1, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The game was Indigenous Heritage Night that featured a pre-game ceremony with a land acknowledgement, a ceremonial faceoff including representatives from Crowe’s Gas, Alderville First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation and the National Anthem, sung by Curve Lake First Nation School students.

The first period was all Windsor. Protas, the Washington Capitals prospect, fed Ryan Abraham who one-timed it at point-blank range for the 1-0 lead just 29 seconds in. Los Angeles Kings prospect Greentree lent a hand this time with a toe drag, then gave it to Protas in the slot, who rung it home for a 2-0 lead. The goal marked the 100th point of the season for both players. It was the first time two Windsor teammates hit the century mark in a season since 1994-95. Windsor tacked on a late goal from AJ Spellacy to make it 3-0 after the first.

Windsor struck again, thanks to Greentree, early in the second period on the power play. He sniped it from the far-side point that made its way through traffic for a 4-0 score. Peterborough finally found the scoresheet as Brady Stonehouse won the draw in the faceoff circle and immediately got it to Genz Ula, who wristed it home to make it 4-1. Greentree and Protas struck again as they were the two assists to a Wyatt Kennedy goal to restore the four-goal lead. Greentree struck again on the power play, this time, he sniped it from the far-side faceoff dot and got his second goal of the game and fourth point; good enough to earn first-star honours.

The third period only saw Nathan Gaymes score for Windsor and the Spitfires left Peterborough with a 7-1 win.

The Petes are on the road for their next game at the Brantford Civic Centre to take on the Bulldogs this Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Peterborough Petes to Celebrate Indigenous Heritage Night For Thursday's Game

The Peterborough Petes will host their annual Indigenous Heritage Night with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre against the Windsor Spitfires this Thursday.

This year, the Petes will again use the attached logo designed by Kory Parkin, an Indigenous Painter & Digital Creator from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The logo highlights the traditional name of Peterborough, Nogojiwanong, meaning ‘place at the foot of the rapids.’

“Since the land today is preoccupied by many Indigenous groups I thought it would best represent those who came before by changing Peterborough to the name it went by before,” said Parkin. “Known as a great fishing spot and the word meaning, place at the end of the rapids, that’s why I included the canoe and the water behind to give a rapid look to the water.”

The pre-game ceremony will include a land acknowledgement, a ceremonial faceoff including representatives from Crowe’s Gas, Alderville First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation and the National Anthem, which Curve Lake First Nation School will sing.

Throughout the game, fans can see dance ceremonies and dancers from Alderville First Nation on the ice at the intermissions and in the lobby. There will also be storytelling on the video board throughout the game, including Sky Woman and Turtle Island.

Peterborough Petes Raise Over $17,000 In Next Gen Game In Support of Five Counties Children's Centre

The Peterborough Petes Next Gen Game raised $17,056 to support kids’ treatment services for Five Counties Children’s Centre, announced on Tuesday.

The game was on Family Day (Feb. 17), where the Petes succeeded in a comeback bid against the Kitchener Rangers, winning 5-3. The Next Gen Game allowed children to experience it up close and personal as they signed one-day contracts to be Next Gen Staff.

The following were the children and their respective roles:

  • Saphira Tuckers: Assistant Coach

This year’s game was another sellout and funds were raised through donations, sales, a raffle draw and corporate sponsorships. 

Scott Pepin, CEO of Five Counties, says the total team effort to help reduce wait times for high-demand services like speech therapy and occupational therapy at the Peterborough-based children’s treatment centre.

“The Peterborough Petes are tremendous hosts and, once again, the team, their fans and our Five Counties supporters all provided a huge assist to ensure more children and families in our community get access to the care they need when they need it,” said Pepin.

The Petes are celebrating Indigenous Heritage Night for Thursday night’s game against the Windsor Spitfires.

Photos: Peterborough Petes Practice In Havelock; Hold Free Skate and Autograph Session For Havelock Hawks

The Peterborough Petes treated Havelock hockey fans as the team held a practice and autograph session at the HBM Community Centre on Monday afternoon.

The team had practice ahead of their Thursday night game against the Windsor Spitfires. A free skate was held where children from the Havelock Hawks (Havelock Minor Hockey) got to hit the ice with the Petes.

Following ice activities, the Petes held an autograph session for Havelock families which also served food and had a decorative Petes cake.

Donations and 50/50 draws were at the event in support of Havelock Minor Hockey.

The Petes concluded the day with an autographed jersey presented to Havelock Minor Hockey president, Danielle Follette.

Peterborough Petes Comeback Bid Falls Short In 4-3 Loss to Brampton Bulldogs

The Peterborough Petes had a late charge in the third period but fell one goal shy of tying the game as they lost 4-3 to the Brantford Bulldogs, 4-3, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The scoring opened when former Pete Nick Lardis got the puck immediately after the Bulldogs won a faceoff in their own zone. Lardis won the race and scored on the breakaway for a 1-0 lead as the period’s only goal.

Peterborough evened things as they had an odd-man rush set up by Petes defenceman Carson Cameron. He bank passed it to Francis Parish, who took a shot and Adam Levac pounced on the rebound for a 1-1 tie. Brantford regained the lead less than four minutes later as Marek Vanacker, on a three-on-one opportunity, hit the top shelf for a 2-1 lead. Lardis hat the hot hands by tacking on back-to-back scores to get the hat trick in the span of less than four minutes for a 4-1 Brantford lead. The third goal marked the 60th of the season for Lardis.

In the third period, Peterborough found the back of the net again just over halfway through as Brody Partridge jumped on the rebound from a point shot to make it 4-2. The Petes tacked on one more thanks to Braydon McCallum who forced a turnover in the offensive zone and quickly ripped it for a 4-3 game. The Petes had 23 shots in the final frame but could not make a third shot of the period find the back of the net as Brantford held on for the 4-3 win.

The Petes hit the road to Barrie to take on the Colts this Saturday at Sadlon Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
