Kinsmen Minor Football League Enters Second-Half of Season With Week Five Games

The Kinsmen Minor Football League (KMFL) is in its mid-season, running its Week Five games on Saturday.

The week kicked off with the Senior Roughriders defeating the TiCats 41-0. Michael Porter led the scoring for the Roughriders with two touchdowns. Calvin Toplak, Chris Chmarney and Vincent Martin-Holowaty each reached the end zone. Kaden Curtis kicked four converts and added a 23-yard field goal.

The first Junior game saw the Roughriders win over the TiCats 32-8. Mason Earnshaw scored three touchdowns for the Roughriders while Sterling Denton added a single score. Jacob Cahorn kicked all four converts. Landon Brook scored the touchdown for the TiCats with Wesley Clark kicking the convert.

The second Junior game had the RedBlacks defeating the Argonauts 32-6. Carter Gray led the way for the RedBlacks to hit paydirt twice. Landon Clements, Easton Schenk and Hudson Brethour each added a single touchdown. Easton Schenk also kicked three converts. Jamieson Temple scored the lone touchdown for the Argos.

The final game of the day saw the Senior RedBlacks defeat the Argos 49-21. Brody Munnings led the scoring for the RedBlacks with four touchdowns. Mason Desroches had two touchdowns and Levi Paige added a single. Brock Hendren kicked two converts and Desroches kicked a single. Paige also ran in a convert for a single point. Ethan Bebbington scored two touchdowns for the Argos, while Parker Vivian added a single. Max Ytsma kicked a convert.

The last week of the regular season sees the second Friday Night Lights game on Friday. The Argonauts will take on the TiCats, with Junior action kicking off at 6 p.m., followed by the Seniors at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will see the Roughriders and RedBlacks in Junior action at 8 a.m. and Senior action at 9 a.m.

Peterborough Police Seeking Suspect Who Stole Wallet From Senior Woman's Hand

The Peterborough Police Service is investigating after a wallet was stolen from a customer's hand at a business in the Hunter Street East and Burnham Street area on Monday morning.

At roughly 8 a.m., officers were called to a convenience store after a 71-year-old woman reported taking her wallet out of her hand. The woman was not injured. 

The suspect was described to police as: 

• White 

• Approximately 5'7"

• Medium build

• Short black beard 

• Black hoodie, with hood up 

• Red/black/white black jacket, soft material

Women’s Business Network Annual Fundraising Holiday Gala and Auction Announced For Dec. 4

The Women’s Business Network (WBN) of Peterborough has announced its annual Holiday Gala and Auction, taking place on Dec. 4 at the Peterborough Holiday Inn.

This year’s event features an Online Auction from Nov. 20 to Dec. 5 at 6 p.m, hosted on the Nonprofit Bidding platform.

Proceeds from this year’s gala will support YWCA Peterborough Haliburton's vital programs and services, focusing on women experiencing gender-based violence according to a press release. The WBN has set a fundraising goal of $15,000 to help provide essential support for women and children escaping abusive situations in our community.

The WBN seeks donations for the auction and encourages the community to contribute items such as gift certificates, tickets, memberships or items valued at $25 or more. Donors will receive recognition through their company name/logo displayed alongside their donated items and exposure across WBN’s social media platforms and during the event.

Items can be donated online.

Once the auction closes, a pick-up can be arranged with the winning bidder through the auction site.

Peterborough Man Wins Top Prize of $75,000 From Instant Cashboom

Peterborough’s Leslie Mann is $75,000 richer after winning a top prize with Instant Cashboom, announced on Friday.

The truck driver has been playing the lottery with OLG for more than 20 years. He plays weekly and enjoys a variety of games, including Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Instant win tickets.

“I played my ticket while I was still at the store and instantly knew that I had won. I couldn’t believe it. I was so surprised and overwhelmed with emotion,” said Mann. “I shared the good news with my family and everyone-including me-was thrilled.”

With the money, Mann plans to help his family and plan a trip to England or Australia.

The winning ticket was purchased at Brookdale Kwik Mart on Chemong Road in Peterborough.

AON Inc. held a double feature of events with a ‘Taste of the Gardens’ food showcase and a ‘Fall Bake Sale’ held at Princess Gardens and Empress Gardens respectively on Thursday afternoon.

The Taste of the Gardens is a food showcase with over 20 vendors at Princess Gardens. It allows residents to sample various foods and drinks served at AON Inc.’s long-term care homes.

“It's bringing a food show to our residents so they get a chance to sample different ideas for the menus,” said Dan Leal, AON Inc. director of dining services. “Our vendors have come to showcase some of their new products with feedback for their fall menu.”

The feedback allows AON Inc. to adjust its menus from the feedback to better suit the needs of the residents and mix up the food choices available throughout the year.

“A lot of the vendors have commented on how the residents are enjoying their products and it's nice to see that the products that they are promoting and selling are bringing smiles to someone's face,” explained Leal. “They're enjoying it and they're getting honest feedback.”

Simultaneously, Empress Gardens hosted a bake sale, with all proceeds benefitting Kawartha Food Share.

The baked goods included brownies, cookies, pies, haystacks, tarts and more, all made by AON Inc. staff.

Samples of baked goods, coffee, tea, and lemonade were also available to the public.

$1,575 was raised as a result of the bake sale fundraiser.

New Peterborough-Based Company Launches Alcoholic Maple Seltzer

Locally-owned company Maple Light has launched its self-titled hard maple seltzer in various locations in Peterborough.

According to a press release, the drink is a vodka-based seltzer and the first of its kind. It contains a hint of maple syrup (tapped by the founders in Ontario), citrus notes and sparkling water. It has a four-percent alcoholic content.

“Maple has a long heritage in Canada, and we're excited to share it in an innovative new format,” said Maple Light’s founders.

The drink’s inspiration came from the founders boiling down sap in their sugar shack in 2023. It created a maple cocktail that was a hit with their family and friends.

Maple Light is available at the following locations and is coming soon to grocery and convenience stores:

• Local bars and restaurants, including (but not limited to) Maple Moose Pub, Jesse’s Tap and Grill, Night Kitchen and The Vine

• Peterborough Memorial Centre

Former Peterborough Woman Arrested On Historic Sexual Exploitation/Assault Charges

A 67-year-old former Peterborough resident is facing charges in connection with a historical sexual assault.

In January, Peterborough Police Service Sex Unit detectives were made aware of incidents that happened in the early 1990s when the victim was 16 years old and placed into the care of a Peterborough family.  It was learned that the incidents had continued for several years.  Through investigation, Police found that the suspect was located in Quebec. 

On Sept. 26, a Canada-wide warrant for the suspect was issued. Officers in Quebec executed the warrant, and the suspect was brought back to Peterborough by officers with Peterborough Police on Thursday.

The woman was arrested on the strength of the warrant and charged with:

• Sexual Exploitation X2

• Sexual Assault

The accused is held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

Peterborough Petes Blanked In Low-Scoring Affair Against the Sudbury Wolves

The Peterborough Petes are still searching for their first win after getting shut out by the Sudbury Wolves in a 1-0 loss at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The Petes thought they struck first 33 seconds into the game on an odd-man rush. Colin Fitzgerald gave a pass to Brennan Faulkner who one-timed it. It hit Finn Marshall who only stopped it partially but the puck ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and stayed out to keep it scoreless.

The game’s lone goal came 6:55 into the first period as the Petes were on the power play. Carson Cameron played the puck in his own zone off the boards but wiped out immediately after. It allowed Sudbury’s Rowan Henderson to scoop up the loose puck and send it to Chase Coughlan who was all alone at point blank range against Petes goaltender Liam Sztuska. Coughlan was able to score through the five-hole to make it a 1-0 game.

Chase Lefebvre had a shorthanded breakaway almost halfway through the period but fired it too high and went over the net. Shots were 17-6 in favour of the visitors after one.

Peterborough had a chance to tie the game as they had a one-minute five-on-three power play but failed to solve Wolves goaltender Finn Marshall. Shortly after the failed two-man advantage, Peterborough had another minor power play opportunity but could not capitalize again. Shots were 13-11 for Sudbury over Peterborough in the second period.

The Petes did their best to tie the game up. Their best chance came with under two minutes left in regulation as Ryder McIntyre took a shot from the point and Cameron tipped the shot. Marshall was able to glove it away as part of his 40-save shutout night (his first career shutout) and the Sudbury Wolves leave town with a 1-0 win over the Petes.

The Petes play on short rest as they travel to Guelph to take on the Storm this Friday at the Sleeman Centre, with puck drop at 7:07 p.m.
