Peterborough-Based Startup Pitched Launches to Revolutionize The Way Canadians Camp

Peterborough-based entrepreneur/world traveller Olaf Dunn has launched Pitched, Canada’s first campsite booking model.

The platform—"it's really the outdoor version of Airbnb," says John Gills from the Innovation Cluster—is designed to let campers escape the crowds and get the chance to explore new land by allowing any person in Ontario to host their own property and get paid for it. Pitched allows anyone to host their land as a campsite, from farms to forests, vineyards to waterfronts and more.

With over 50 campsites in Ontario alone, Pitched provides an opportunity for the campers to have a unique place to stay and the host an opportunity to share local knowledge of the site, creating memories travellers wouldn’t experience at an average campground.

The inspiration came to Dunn as he was searching for campsites one summer for a family getaway, and came to the realization it was difficult to find a campsite. “It is hard for the average person to find a campsite that is both secluded and quiet,” says Dunn. “We wanted to create an experience for campers who are adventurous, maybe take impulsive road trips, or just want to try somewhere new.”

When searching for a location, campers will be able to view everything available to them when they are at the campsite. The minimum requirement is room for a tent, but hosts can choose to provide equipment like fire pits, tent supplies, and more.

In order to know the reliability of campers and hosts, the Pitched app allows reviews of each person’s experience. If an issue occurs, users are allowed to contact Pitched to be investigated. As a company based on being passionate for the outdoors, Pitched most important rule is a “leave no trace” policy when campers depart the site.

Peterborough resident Alex Bushell was one of the first users to beta test and list his property (located near Ottawa) on Pitched. "My property would often go weeks without being used during the beautiful summer weather,” he says. “Pitched allows me to let people enjoy the property while also earning a few dollars to help me offset some of the costs of ownership."

Bushell's property instantly gained attraction, and he had eight bookings. “It’s also really nice to share my weekend getaway property with like-minded people and I've actually become friends with a few of them,” he says.

Experience: Try Camping At oTENTiks On Trent Severn Waterway

With the Trent Severn Waterway set to open for the season May 18th, a unique experience to try this summer is camping along a Lock in a oTENTik—which is a cross between a tent and a rustic cedar cabin.

Parks Canada gives you the opportunity to experience camping at their oTENTik accommodations at two locations: Lock 24 - Douro and Lock 35 - Rosedale. The oTENTik is a unique destination for visitors to enjoy camping at ease with the convenience of a bed and a campsite already set up.

Lock 24 is situated between Lakefield and Peterborough at 4052 County Road 32 in the Township of Douro-Dummer. There, you can choose from 3 oTENTiks located on a small island between the canal and the Otonabee River, or one fully-accessible oTENTik located lockside.

A Local Company Wants To Build A Water Park On Little Lake

Peterborough couple Jason and Niki Pulchinski have a dream: to construct a water park on Little Lake in this city they love.

Their Peterborough-based company At The Lake Distributing Inc.—which sells water toys and docks, and has installed water parks across the country—wants to construct a quarter million dollar inflatable water park on Little Lake.

The Pulchinski's company has a proven track record: They have installed water parks (see pics below) at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario; Camp Qwanoes in Crofton, British Columbia; Clevelands House Resort in Minett, Ontario; Sunshine House Boats in Cranbrook, British Columbia and an upcoming one at Railyard Wake Park in Mount Albert, Ontario this summer.

These parks really add a wow factor to any place that installs one, and this is what ATL Distributing wants to bring to Peterborough—thinking it could be great for locals but also an awesome tourist attraction being near the Trent Severn Waterway and Lift Lock for boaters coming through from all parts.

It could help put Peterborough on the map even more.

ATL want to pay the city to put up this water park (they are open to different locations but suggested one near Del Crary Park and the Art Gallery of Peterborough—see rendering at top of post), and incur all the costs associated with running it (insurance, security, and everything else involved in the running of this park).

It would be run by ATL and it would create at least six well paid jobs, the company tells PTBOCanada. Safety is top of mind: There would be lifeguards, and lifejackets would be required wear. They also would partner with local businesses, kids camps and kids charities to get people downtown.

"Bringing a water park to Peterborough is really for the attraction of people to our beautiful downtown and Del Crary Park by Little Lake," ATL says.
 
Jason has reached out to the City of Peterborough and is hoping to get a meeting to present an elaborate proposal to them of how their company can work with the muncipality on the project. Without their blessing, the water park will not happen.

In the meantime, Jason and Niki will continue to dream big, believing this project could create a huge splash here. They hope to someday see kids and adults from Peterborough and beyond creating family memories at this water park on Little Lake in the Kawarthas.

These Guys Put Together A 14 Foot 7 Inch Snowman On Super Bowl Sunday

In the warmup to Super Bowl Sunday, Darryl Robertson and a bunch of his buddies in Peterborough played some snow football, just like they do every year before the big game.

This year was a little different, with all that amazing 20 centimetres of white stuff that fell. When they got back from playing, they saw that the neighbours had constructed a 8 foot snowman. "All us adults decided we could do better," Robertson tells PTBOCanada.

So they got out some ladders and went to work on him...

Ninety minutes later, the guys had made the snowman on Laing Court into an epic dude that now stands 14 feet, 7 inches high.

The guys definitely scored a touchdown with neighbours and onlookers building this snowman. Well played.

Ontario Speed Skating Oval In Lakefield Hosting Candlelight Skate

Polarfest is hosting a candlelight skate this Saturday (February 3rd) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ontario Speed Skating Oval in Lakefield.

The light from hundreds of candles will guide your way around the 400 metre Oval.

Admission is free and rental speed skates are available.

Super Bowl Party Planned For Chemong Lake Could Be Biggest Yet

For five years, there has been a Super Bowl bash on the ice on Chemong Lake, and organizers this year say it could be the biggest turnout yet.

A Facebook event page has been set up for the party, which starts at 3 p.m. this Sunday (February 4th) on Chemong Lake at the end of Ennis Road in Ennismore.

The party includes a massive projection screen (see above) with multiple flat screens for viewing the game on ice and in a large Shaker hut.

Guests for the Chemong Lake tailgate party are invited to come by snowmobile, four wheeler, or by vehicle (lots of parking is available on the street or the plowed parking lot on Ennis), and ask that you ensure you have designated drivers.

Peterborough Named One Of Most Active Cities In Canada By Expedia

Peterborough has been named as the No. 21 most active city in Canada in a new ranking released by Expedia.

Expedia's ranking system was based on the following criteria...

  • Average number of marathons and hiking trails

  • Access to bike paths, trails, and races

  • Per capita gyms, including but not limited to CrossFit, yoga studios, rock climbing, etc.

  • Abundance of outdoor activities such as kayaking, canoeing, etc.
