Peterborough Police Seeking Two Theft Suspects Involved In Pickpocketing At Lansdowne Place Parking Lot

The Peterborough Police Service are seeking two suspects involved in a pickpocketing incident at the Lansdowne Place Mall parking lot that occurred Monday.

At roughly 1 p.m., a 75-year-old resident reported that he had been running errands when a man and a woman in the north parking lot at Lansdowne Place Mall near Lansdowne Street and Monaghan Road approached him.  

The woman said he had something on his coat and started trying to clean him off when the man approached and started helping her despite the victim declining their help. When they left him, he noticed his wallet was missing and about $4,000 had been taken through his cards before they could be cancelled. 

The suspects were described to police as:

Suspect #1

  • White, female

  • 5’6

  • 150 lbs.

  • Wearing a dark hat and dark coat, medical mask on her face and what sounded like an Eastern European accent

Suspect #2

  • White, male

  • 5’10

  • 180 lbs.

  • Wearing a grey coat with a multi-coloured scarf, wearing a medical mask and also had what sounded like an Eastern European accent

Peterborough Man Arrested and Charged for Two Instances of Theft

A 36-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges after two theft reports.

At around noon, Community FIRST Unit officers located a suspect matching the description of the male in the theft reports in the area of Aylmer Street and Simcoe Street. He was taken into custody and during search after arrest a laptop and a set of keys from a business were located. Both items were returned to the owners.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada X2

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently bound by a probation order with the following condition: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

Peterborough Woman Charged With Break and Enter and Violating Probation Order

A 41-year-old Peterborough woman is facing charges after a break-and-enter incident Tuesday night.

At roughly 9:30 p.m., the break-and-enter occurred at a Stewart Street and King Street-area residence.  An unknown female had entered the home and was still inside. Officers entered the home and took the woman into custody.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Break, Enter a dwelling house with intent to commit indictable offence

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently bound by a probation order with the following conditions: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Peterborough Man Facing Several Charges Including Setting Fire to a Person In a Residence

A 32-year-old Peterborough man faces 15 charges involving possession of a weapon and setting another person on fire after an incident on Sunday.

There was an unwanted male in a residence in the Towerhill Road and Hilliard Street area. He struck one resident in the face, punched, kicked, choked and set another resident’s clothes on fire and pointed a firearm at a third person in the house. 

At roughly 10:30 p.m. Monday, officers spotted a man matching the description given to police in the Chemong Road and Bellevue Street area. Emergency Response Team officers took the man into custody. During a search after arrest, located a pellet pistol in a backpack the suspect was carrying.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order x2

  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Pointing a Firearm

  • Assault with A Weapon x3

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm - Choke, suffocate or strangle

  • Uttering Threats - Cause death or Bodily Harm

  • Arson - Disregard for Human Life

The accused is currently bound by two probation orders with the following conditions: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to not communicate with one of the people involved in the incident.

The accused is also currently bound by a prohibition order with the following conditions: to not possess any firearm, crossbow, prohibited weapon, restricted weapon or prohibited device.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.

Three People Arrested For Impaired Driving In Separate Incidents

Peterborough Police Service arrested three drivers for impaired-related offences in three incidents early Saturday morning.

A 56-year-old Peterborough man is facing impaired charges after a traffic stop.  On Saturday, a vehicle was spotted being driven erratically and was stopped in the Lundy’s Lane and Monaghan Road area. The officers noticed signs of impairment with the driver. 

The was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on March 11.

A 28-year-old Peterborough man is facing impaired charges after a single-vehicle collision early Saturday morning.

At roughly 3 a.m. on Saturday, a 9-1-1 call occurred about a collision in the Highway 7 and Parkhill Road area. Upon arrival, officers located the driver outside the vehicle and, during the conversation, noticed signs of impairment.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is schedule to appear in court on March 4. 

A 21-year-old Omemee man is facing impaired charges after an incident Saturday morning.

At roughly 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called about a vehicle in a snowbank in the Valleyview Drive and Parkhill Road West area. It was reported that the vehicle was running and a male in the driver’s seat was either asleep or unconscious. The driver was awake and officers were able to talk him and noticed signs of impairment.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on March 11.

Brampton Woman Arrested and Charged With Fraud With Suspicious Deposits

A 38-year-old Brampton woman is facing a fraud charge concerning an incident reported last fall.

On Oct. 18, officers with the Fraud Unit received an online report from a Peterborough business about suspicious activity around their accounts.

Several invoice payments were being deposited into the account of a person unknown to the business and the account was with a different banking institution than the business used. 

Through investigation, a suspect was identified and the woman attended the Peterborough Police station and was taken into custody on Wednesday.

She was charged with:

  • Fraud Under $5,000

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on March 11.

Group Sought For Distraction Theft Incident at CIBC

The Peterborough Police Service is seeking public assistance in connection with a distraction theft that occurred at a CIBC just off Lansdowne Place, reported Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Dec. A 74-year-old woman was approached by a male suspect and was told that she did not finish her transaction. The man grabbed her card and tapped it. Police believe the card was swapped with another one and the victim’s card was used for more fraudulent transactions. Just over $1800 was taken. 

The suspects are described as:

Male Suspect 1:

  • Tan complexion

  • Approximately 5ft, 5 in tall.

  • Brown winter hat

  • Wearing a medical mask

  • Tan coat

  • Black pants

  • Brown and black shoes

Male Suspect 2:

  • Tan complexion

  • Red and white winter hat with a maple leaf on it

  • Wearing a medical mask

  • Maroon sweater

  • Black pants

Female Suspect 1:

  • Tan complexion

  • Brown hair

  • Green/olive sweater

Female Suspect 2:

  • Tan complexion

  • Purple winter hat with a white pompom on the top. Lettering saying "CANADA on the front of it.

  • Grey coat

Peterborough Police Warn Public of Bitcoin Scams Surfacing With Information Campaign

The Peterborough Police Service, along with several convenience stores in Peterborough, have started an information campaign around scams and Bitcoin, announced on Friday.

Police say that scammers often ask victims to make payments in Bitcoin.  To raise awareness, the Peterborough Police Service Fraud Unit attended convenience stores with cryptocurrency machines and placed information posters near the machines.

Police also ask residents to be vigilant and remind everyone that government agencies will not ask for payment in Bitcoin, pre-paid VISAs, gift cards, wire transfers or direct deposits to personal accounts. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible.

One Woman Facing Shoplifting Charges; Was With Man Breaching Court Order

A 44-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman from Peterborough are charged following a shoplifting event on Thursday afternoon.

At roughly 5:30 p.m., Community FIRST officers arrived at a shoplifting incident at a box store on Lansdowne Street West and located a female matching the description provided. She was in possession of the stolen items when police had engaged her. She was found in the company of a male breaching a court order.

The Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Disobeying an Order of Court

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is due to appear in court on Feb. 25.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is due to appear in court on Feb. 25.

Third Teenager Arrested From Neighbourhood Shooting in November; Peterborough Police Seeking Fourth Teen

Peterborough Police have made another arrest after a teen turned himself in with a connection involving a neighbourhood shooting incident near the townhomes at 850 Fairbairn St., first reported on Nov. 13.

When the initial incident occured, several units were struck with bullets, more bullets were fired into the air but no one was injured.  Peterborough Police Service had arrested two teenagers in November.

A 16-year-old Peterborough male was charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm

  • Possession of Loaded Prohibited Firearm

  • Careless Use of Firearm

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Pointing a Firearm

  • Discharge a Firearm into or at a Place in a Reckless Manner

  • Utter Threats to Cause Death

  • Fail to Comply with Sentence x2

  • Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x2

 A 19-year-old Norwood man was charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm

  • Possession of Loaded Prohibited Firearm

  • Careless Use of Firearm

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Pointing a Firearm

  • Discharge a Firearm into or at a Place in a Reckless Manner

  • Utter Threats to Cause Death

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine

  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

Both suspects are currently before the courts.

A third teen wanted in connection with the shooting turned himself in to police on Wednesday. Officers with the Emergency Response Team and K9 attended a residence in Peterborough and took the teen into custody without incident. 

The 16-year-old Peterborough male was arrested on the strength of the warrant and charged with:

  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited device or Ammunition

  • Discharge a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner

  • Pointing a Firearm

  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

  • Uttering Threats - Cause death or Bodily Harm

  • Fail to Comply with Sentence X5

  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order X4

The teen is being held in custody and will appear in court on Thursday. 

The Peterborough Police Service continues to search for a fourth teen who is believed to be involved in this incident.
