Peterborough Petes Goaltending Stellar But Fall In Overtime to Rival Oshawa Generals

Peterborough Petes’s goaltender Zach Bowen earned first star of the game honours with 43 saves but could not get the win as they lost to the Oshawa Generals 2-1 in overtime at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Peterborough struck first 1:47 into the game. On the rush, Caden Taylor opted to take the shot and rifled it past Generals goalie Jacob Oster for a 1-0 lead.

It was the only goal until the early third period as Oshawa’s Luca Marrelli had the puck at the point and was able to snipe it through traffic for a 1-1 tie.

The game needed overtime to decide a winner but it gave the Petes their first point of the season after they had been held without one in seven games.

It only took 25 seconds to finish overtime as Lauri Sinivuori in a two-on-two, received a saucer pass and rifled it top shelf for the walk-off goal and a 2-1 win.

The Petes can get revenge on the second half of the home-and-home series as they travel to Oshawa to face the Generals on Friday night. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Blanked In Low-Scoring Affair Against the Sudbury Wolves

The Peterborough Petes are still searching for their first win after getting shut out by the Sudbury Wolves in a 1-0 loss at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The Petes thought they struck first 33 seconds into the game on an odd-man rush. Colin Fitzgerald gave a pass to Brennan Faulkner who one-timed it. It hit Finn Marshall who only stopped it partially but the puck ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and stayed out to keep it scoreless.

The game’s lone goal came 6:55 into the first period as the Petes were on the power play. Carson Cameron played the puck in his own zone off the boards but wiped out immediately after. It allowed Sudbury’s Rowan Henderson to scoop up the loose puck and send it to Chase Coughlan who was all alone at point blank range against Petes goaltender Liam Sztuska. Coughlan was able to score through the five-hole to make it a 1-0 game.

Chase Lefebvre had a shorthanded breakaway almost halfway through the period but fired it too high and went over the net. Shots were 17-6 in favour of the visitors after one.

Peterborough had a chance to tie the game as they had a one-minute five-on-three power play but failed to solve Wolves goaltender Finn Marshall. Shortly after the failed two-man advantage, Peterborough had another minor power play opportunity but could not capitalize again. Shots were 13-11 for Sudbury over Peterborough in the second period.

The Petes did their best to tie the game up. Their best chance came with under two minutes left in regulation as Ryder McIntyre took a shot from the point and Cameron tipped the shot. Marshall was able to glove it away as part of his 40-save shutout night (his first career shutout) and the Sudbury Wolves leave town with a 1-0 win over the Petes.

The Petes play on short rest as they travel to Guelph to take on the Storm this Friday at the Sleeman Centre, with puck drop at 7:07 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Squander Three-Goal Lead; Rookie Scores Twice In Losing Effort

Petes rookie Colin Fitzgerald had two goals to help give the team a three-goal lead but could not hang as they lost to the North Bay Battalion, 5-3, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Pride Night on Thursday.

Fitzgerald opened the scoring 50 seconds off a one-timer on a pass from Ryder McIntyre to give Peterborough a 1-0 lead. Battalion’s Zach Wilson was charged with a high-sticking double-minor penalty which gave Peterborough a four-minute power play. Quinton Pagé capitalized after gathering a rebound from a point shot and scoring on the backhand to make it 2-0. On the same power play, Fitzgerald scored again, similar to Pagé’s goal but on the forehand to make it 3-0.

North Bay had battled back as less than two minutes later, Kent Greer and Jacob LeBlanc had scored to make it 3-2 at the end of one.

The visitors were the only team to score in the second thanks to Lirim Amidovski and the game was tied going into the third.

Ethan Procyszyn scored just under eight minutes into the frame to give North Bay their first lead of the game. Peterborough had 13 shots in the period but could not find the back of the net. They also allowed one empty-net goal from Anthony Romani and the Battalion leave Peterborough with a 5-3 win.

Fitzgerald, the Peterborough native was selected by the Petes in the first round, third overall of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. His two goals were the first of his OHL career.

“It was pretty special,” he said. “I think I went dizzy when I scored. It didn’t feel real out there. Once the boys got me the puck, it kind of sunk in that I scored my first goal.”

The Petes play on back-to-back days as they hit the road to take on the Sudbury Wolves. The game is on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Sudbury Community Arena.

The event took place on Sept. 9 at Kawartha Golf Club and was originally announced by Mayor Jeff Leal on Aug. 13.

“I want to sincerely thank all the participants and sponsors who so generously supported these two important causes in our community,” he said. “Special thanks to Nigel Lister for organizing the tournament and to Blake Ulrich, Jamie Carter and all the staff at Kawartha Golf Club for their hard work to make the event run smoothly.”

The tournament drew 80 golfers that saw community members, local businesses, and city leaders for a day of friendly competition and fundraising.

“We are so appreciative of Mayor Leal selecting KFS as one of the recipients of the Inaugural Peterborough Mayoral Invitational,” said Ashlee Aitken, KFS general manager. “Food Insecurity is unfortunately on the rise in Peterborough and County and this financial support will allow us to supply our 37 member agencies with much needed food items to assist in feeding nearly 14,000 individuals. Thank you to all who participated in making this a fun day for two fantastic causes.”

“We are so pleased to have been chosen and to have a role on such a tremendous day,” Teresa Jordan, CLTF executive director “Despite the rain, everyone was in high spirits, generous and interested. The personal connection that Mayor Leal has with Community Living helped to shine a light on what we aim to do each day in people's lives. It was a wonderful event, and we are so grateful for the support.”

Leal says he plans to run the event again next year.
