Former Peterborough Petes Defenceman Being Inducted Into the Hockey Hall of Fame

Former Peterborough Petes defenceman Colin Campbell is being immortalized as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2024.

Campbell is being inducted in the builder category and is currently the NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations.

He played three seasons (his entire junior hockey career) with the Peterborough Petes from 1970-72, He had 95 points in 169 games played during that span. In his last season, he had 47 points and 189 penalty minutes while being crowned an OHL champion in 1972 with teammates such as Bob Gainey, Stan Jonathan and Doug Jarvis.

He was honoured by the Petes with a banner-raising ceremony in January 2020.

The Tillsonburg native was drafted 27th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1973 NHL Draft and fifth overall by the Vancouver Blazers in the 1973 WHA Draft. He played one year with Vancouver in the WHA before signing on with Pittsburgh. HHe has also played for other NHL teams such as Colorado, Detroit, Edmonton and Vancouver before he retired in 1985. Ten years later, he coached the for four seasons.

After retiring in 1985, Campbell was an assistant coach with the Red Wings until 1990. He was an associate coach with the Rangers for parts of three seasons before his promotion. He replace Mike Keenan as coach after New York championship year in 1994.

After being released by the Rangers during the 1997-98 season, Campbell retain his involvement with the NHL in hockey operations, officiating and central scouting prior to his current role.

The 2024 Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Celebration is Nov. 11 in Toronto. He is joining the ranks of NHL greats such as Shea Weber, Jeremy Roenick, Pavel Datsyuk and others for this year’s class.

Six Nations' Eight-Goal Run Plunges Lakers in 12-7 Loss

The Lakers could not keep up with the defending Mann Cup Champion Six Nations Chiefs as the latter scored eight-straight goals early on for the 12-7 win at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Ohsweken on Tuesday night.

Reigning MSL MVP Lyle Thompson started the scoring on the power play to give Six Nations the lead less than two minutes into the game. He was answered by fellow Haudenosaunee brethren Koleton Marquis who got one back for the Lakers.

The two teams traded goals on more time including a Joe Resetarits power-play goal for a 2-2 game. The floodgates opened from there as Six Nations took over the game, scoring five unanswered including a Thompson hat trick to round out the period for a 7-2 game.

Six Nations kept their foot on the gas pedal as they rung off another three straight to make it 10-2. Carter Page finally broke the run shorthanded to try and pump some life into the Lakers with a goal. It was quickly met with an Austin Staats goal from Six Nations. Marquis and Resetaris both got their second goals of the night to end the second period but the Lakers still trail 11-5.

The Lakers were able to outscore the Chiefs in the third but still lost the war. Colin Matthews found the scoresheet and Resetarits got a hat trick on the power play but two goals were nowhere close enough to mount a comeback and Peterborough fell 12-7.

With the loss, the Lakers cannot finish higher than third place. They could still be passed by the Oakville Rock who have three games left while the Lakers finish their season Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre to host the Brampton Excelsiors. The game is in support of Five Counties Children’s Centre for Little Lakers night.

Koleton Marquis's Nine-Point Night Gives Lakers 15-7 Commanding Win Over Cobourg Kodiaks

Kolteon Marquis’s hat trick and six assists blew up the scoreboard for the Peterborough Lakers to get the 15-7 commanding win over the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The first period was perfect for Peterborough, shutting down Cobourg while scoring five. Jake Withers, Carter Page and Colton Armstrong all scored within the first threee minutes of the game to get out to a 3-0 lead. Withers scored again while Thomas Hoggath got on the scoreboard to give the Lakers a 5-0 lead after one.

“We worked hard. They worked really hard,” said Mike Hasen, Lakers head coach. “It was a really good start and the energy that they had carried throughout the entire game.”

The second period saw a flurry of goals from both sides. Each team alternated in scoring goals, netting five apiece to make it 10-5. Peterborough’s last goal scored in that sequence was on the power play by Hoggath, capping off a hat trick. The Lakers continued to score three straight man-advantage scores to cap off an eight-goal period for a 13-5 game going into the third.

The final frame was quiet in scoring as both teams scored only two goals apiece. Marquis had two points this period scoring the period’s first goal and assisting Hiltz’s to cap off his nine-point performace. The Lakers easily dispatched of Cobourg for a 15-7 win.

The Lakers travel to Hagarsville and the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena to try and snap the Six Nations Chiefs’s undefeated run on Tuesday. They finish the regular season against the Brampton Excelsiors on Thursday.

Turner Evans's Hat Trick Helps Peterborough Lakers Hold Off Third-Period Surge From Brooklin L.C. For 7-6 Win

Turner Evans’s hat trick helped the Peterborough Lakers stop the comeback bid from Brooklin L.C. to hold on for a 7-6 win at the Iroquois Park Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

Brooklin drew first blood with two straight goals within the first three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Peterborough answered back with a pair of scores thanks to Turner Evans and Owen Hiltz to tie it up at two. Neither team could score in the second half of the period and remained a 2-2 game after one.

Peterborough took over the game in the second with a perfect period. Joey Cupido scored unassisted to kick off the frame just 3:40 in. Joe Resetarits and Carter Page joined the scoresheet and Peterborough pulled ahead with a 5-2 lead. In the last 16 seconds of the period, Evans scored his second of the game to cap off the period with a 6-2 lead headed into the third.

Brooklin was dialled in during the third as Dawson Theede scored 2:05 into the period, breaking the scoreless streak for over 39 minutes. Evans completed his hat trick to give Peterborough a 7-3 lead almost halfway through the period.

Theede tried to pull Brooklin within striking distance as he scored for the second time this game to cut the deficit to three. Brooklin rung off two back-to-back power-play goals (including a Theede hat trick) with 4:19 left to play and trailed the Lakers by one goal.

Peterborough stood firm as Lakers goaltender Landon Kells made 33 saves and held off the last of Brooklin’s surge for a 7-6 win.

The victory moves Peterborough to a 5-4 record and third place in the league. The Lakers get little rest for their next game, as they host the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Peterborough Pete Tommy Purdeller Signs With Hometown Team

The Peterborough Petes’s Tommy Purdeller has signed with his hometown team, HC Pustertal of the ICE Hockey League, ahead of the 2024-25 season, announced on Thursday.

Purdeller has spent the last two seasons playing for the Petes.

"Tommy is a very good young player who has developed well in Peterborough,” said Jason Jaspers, HC Pustertal head coach. “I had the chance to speak to his coaches there and also to Tommy himself. He has a great character. If he is prepared to give it his all then he has a great future ahead of him."

The Brunico, Italy native was originally selected by the Petes in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2022 CHL Import Draft. In two seasons with the Petes, the Red Bull Hockey Academy product played in 116 OHL games, scoring 23 goals and 42 assists for 65 points. In 2023, Purdeller played in 17 playoff games for the Petes, scoring twice and adding an assist to help Peterborough win the 2023 OHL Championship.

"I chose the HCP because I am convinced of the path we will take this year,” said Purdeller. “I am looking forward to the new challenge of growing as a player and helping the team in every way. I can hardly wait to play in front of our fans and give everything I can to celebrate many victories in the Intercable Arena. For me, there is only one goal and that is clear, to play as successfully as possible in the long term and help bring a championship title to the Pustertal. I am really looking forward to seeing all the Puschtra again."

With Purdeller departure, Martin Matejicek holds one of two import positions available for the Petes next season. The Petes selected Czech forward Adam Novotný with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 CHL Import Draft on Wednesday.

Peterborough Petes Draft Adam Novotný In CHL Import Draft

The Peterborough Petes have drafted Czech forward Adam Novotný with the eighth overall selection in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft on Wednesday.

“We’re excited to select Adam with our first round pick,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations . “Adam is a player that I have seen in person and other members of our hockey staff have watched extensively on video. We believe that the Petes are an excellent option for him to continue his development.”

Novotný is a forward from Nový Bydžov, Czechia. He played 48 games for Mountfield HK U20 last season, scoring 32 goals and adding 27 assists for 59 points.

He was called up to Mountfield HK of the Czech Extraliga, where he played 10 games. Novotný scored in his debut for Mountfield HK in October to become the youngest player to score a goal in the Czech Extraliga at 15. The 6’1”, left-handed shot represented Czechia at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge in P.E.I., scoring one goal and adding two assists in seven games. Novotný, who was born in November 2007, is eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft.

“Adam is a very highly offensively skilled player,” said Patrick O’Connor, Petes assistant coach and director of player personnel. “He’s someone that we’ve followed for quite some time and we feel that his game would be a very good fit in North America. He’s a 2007 birth date, which makes him a great fit for our roster for years to come.”

Peterborough originally held the ninth pick in the draft; however, one team passed, resulting in the Petes moving up one spot. The Petes elected to pass on their second-round pick in the draft as defenceman Martin Matejicek is expected to return and occupy the other import slot on the team.

Little Lakers Night Returns In Support of Five Counties Children’s Centre At Peterborough Lakers's Final Home Game

Five Counties Children’s Centre (FCCC) and the Peterborough Lakers are teaming up again for the second annual Little Lakers Night fundraiser on July 11.

“Our first-ever Little Lakers Night was a great success, and we’re pleased at the generosity of the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers to again partner with us on Little Lakers Night 2.0,” says Scott Pepin, FCCC CEO. “Not only will the game feature amazing lacrosse action, many members of our Five Counties family will also play starring roles throughout the game.”

All proceeds support Five Counties’ Building Abilities for Life campaign which allows more kids and youth in the region to access the life-changing treatment services they need when needed according to a press release.

FCCC families will participate in the ceremonial pre-game ball drop and enjoy a behind-the-scenes experience with the Lakers. Dozens of Five Counties kids and families will also enjoy free tickets to the game – something they have done all season through the Five Counties Ticket Assist Program.

“Five Counties has played a big role throughout the years in our family, and we’re grateful to have this incredible Centre serving families in our community,” says Len Powers, a FCCC ambassador and Lakers’ board member. “The Lakers are very proud to support the Centre’s work and are very pleased to again host Little Lakers Night on July 11.”

Families can join pre-game festivities starting at 7 p.m. Face painting for kids by donation, freezies for sale, pass the bucket, and the chance to buy commemorative Little Lakers Night T-shirts in support of Five Counties are available.

A silent auction will be held during the game. Items include two tickets to Canada’s Wonderland, a Crayola Prize Pack, and jewelry from local artist Valerie Davidson.

New this year for Little Lakers Night is the debut of a specially designed warm-up jersey created by a local youth. Lakers players will wear these jerseys during their pre-game warm-up session. These jerseys, sponsored by Merrett Home Hardware, will be available in an online auction.

Former Peterborough Pete Goaltender Signs One-Year Deal With Belleville Senators

Former Peterborough Pete and two-time OHL Champion goaltender Michael Simpson has signed a one-year, one-way, American Hockey League contract with the Belleville Senators for the 2024-25 season.

“I think signing a one-year deal just makes you have to keep the mindset all season that I need to earn the next contract so I feel it will keep me hungry to continue to work hard every day,” explained Simpson.

He was selected by the Petes in the 10th round, 193rd overall, by the Petes in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. During the 2022-23 season, he lead the Petes to an OHL Championship and won the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the playoff MVP.

As an over-age goaltender this past season, Simpson was traded to the Knights for goaltender Zach Bowen and Kingston Frontenac’s third-round pick in 2025 on Sept. 26 last year.

With the Knights, Simpson had 34 wins in 48 starts to help his hometown team win this year’s OHL Championship.

After finishing his OHL career as a two-time champion, the phone call meant the world to Simpson.

“It was a goal to try and earn a pro deal And for it to be in Belleville it’s great because it’s still pretty close to home and seems like it could be a great fit,” said Simpson. “I’m really excited to play for the Sens.”

Peterborough Lakers Downed From Two Hat Tricks By Defending-Champion Six Nations Arrows in 14-7 Loss

Six Nations struck early and often in the first period. Austin Staats opened the game with a pair of goals in under four minutes for a 2-0 lead. Peterborough matched the defending champions with two power-play goals thanks to Holden Cattoni and Joe Resetarits.

The game was a streak of runs as Six Nations got the next three goals including a pair from Dhane Smith, whose second score came with six seconds left in the frame for a 5-2 lead.

The second period looked just like the first as Six Nations scored another five goals to Peterborough’s two. Former Laker Eli McLaughlin recorded a hat trick against Peterborough with all three goals in coming from the second period. Thomas Hoggarth was the only Laker that recorded a goal with two —including a power-play goal— that period with the score 10-4 going into the third.

Six Nations came out strong again with three straight goals to put Peterborough in a giant hole. The Lakers had a three-goal run of their own but it was too little, too late. Reigning MSL MVP Lyle Thompson put the cherry on top for Six Nations with a hat trick goal over halfway through the third period as the last goal of the game.

“That’s the joy of having another chance to play them. We learned what to expect,” said Resetarits. “Obviously, they’re a phenomenal team. We can’t just sit back and accept that. We have to go out there and play and take it to them as much as we can, dictate the pace as much as we can. Try to help the defence out: offensively, we have to start putting the ball in the net.”

The Arrows continued their undefeated season with a 14-7 with over the Lakers, moving to a 6-0 record while Peterboroough drops to 4-4. This is the Lakers’s third home loss of four games so far this season.

The Lakers are off to enjoy the Canada Day long weekend and return to action against the Brooklin Lacrosse Club at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby on Wednesday.

Peterborough Petes Return to Local Community Rinks For Preseason Games

The Peterborough Petes preseason schedule has been released, with three home games in local community arenas announced on Thursday afternoon.

The Petes start preseason on Sept. 1 as they host the Niagara IceDogs at the Jack Burger Sports Complex in Port Hope. After an away game in Guelph, Peterborough will host the Sudbury Wolves at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre on Sept. 8. The Petes will then travel to Kingston before wrapping up the preseason at the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre in Millbrook as they welcome the Guelph Storm on Sept. 21.

The Petes’s full 2024 preseason schedule cis as follows:

• Sept. 1 - Niagara @ Peterborough - 2:05 p.m. (Jack Burger Sports Complex - Port Hope)

• Sept. 6 - Peterborough @ Guelph - 7:07 p.m.
