Peterborough Lakers Get Six Players In Major Series Lacrosse Draft

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers got six players this weekend in the annual Major Series Lacrosse draft that took place at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville on Sunday.

The Lakers had picks in each of the five rounds with an additional pick in the second round. 

The Lakers drafted: 

  • First round – Koleton Marquis, F, Orangeville Northmen 

  • Second round – Andrew Vradenburg, D, Burlington Blaze 

  • Second round – Brenden Boyle, D, Burlington Blaze 

  • Third round – Tommy Collins, F, Peterborough Lakers 

  • Fourth round – Nolan Kenney, D, Peterborough Lakers 

  • Fifth round – Andrew Kidd, G, Toronto Beaches 

Before the draft, the Lakers protected four graduates of the Jr. A Lakers program: 

  • Captain/Defenceman Adam Thistlethwaite 

  • Forward Zach Thompson 

  • Defence/Transition Ben Trumble 

  • Goaltender Deacan Knott, who is currently the backup goaltender for the Philadelphia Wings 

“I’m super excited to be getting this opportunity to become a Laker,” said Marquis. “Growing up, I’ve always known Peterborough to be the mecca of lacrosse and I can’t wait to be able to compete on the same floor where there has been so much history. Personally, I believe I can bring a skilled, fast-paced style of play to the Lakers, along with a ton of passion and positive energy to the locker room.” 

Marquis is currently in his second year at Johns Hopkins. 

Vradenburg was the hometown captain of the 2023 Minto Cup-winning Burlington Blaze, was drafted by Halifax last September and is currently on their practice roster. The Lakers now sport five members of that Minto Cup team, along with Brenden Boyle and three protected players in Thompson, Trumble and Knott, who were traded from Peterborough to Burlington halfway through last season. 

Collins finished fifth in team scoring for the Jr. Lakers last season and Kenney was brought in to play tough defence. 

Kidd, the Toronto Beaches standout, was drafted by the Albany FireWolves in September and is currently on their practice roster.

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Jan. 23

The Fleming Phoenix basketball and volleyball teams did not have the best of luck as they could not muster a win over the weekend.

The Phoenix men’s basketball team lost its home game on Friday, falling 89 to 64 to the visiting George Brown Huskies.

Shawn Blackwood had 21 points, Jason Diaz netted 13 points and Tristan Paguirigan scored 11 points as the team’s top scoeres.

The Phoenix will try to get back on track when they travel to Belleville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to take on the Loyalist Lancers.

The Phoenix men's and women’s volleyball teams welcomed the Huskies to the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre on Saturday but could not leave home field with a victory.

The women’s team lost 3-0, losing the sets 25-15, 25-9, and 25-9. 

The men’s team won the first set 25-22, and then lost the next three sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23 for a final score of 3-1. 

The Phoenix volleyball teams head to the nation’s capital this weekend to play the Algonquin Wolves in Ottawa on Saturday and the La Cite Coyotes on Sunday.

Peterborough Petes Debut Black Alternate Jerseys On Saturday Night

The Peterborough Petes have officially unveiled their new black alternate jerseys during their home game against the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday.

The jerseys are designed by Pioneer Inc’s. Kyle McDonald. They feature a full black design with a gray Petes logo outlined with white trim. Pioneer Inc. is the same company that designed the Petes new Maroon and White jerseys and the updated Petes logo that debuted at the beginning of the 2023-24 season.

“The Peterborough Petes are extremely excited to debut our official third jerseys at the PMC for our fans. We hope the fans enjoy the sleek new look and aesthetic design elements that are present throughout. These jerseys will serve as an alternative to the traditional maroon and white, moving the brand forward in a new unique way,” said Adam King Petes director of marketing. 

The jerseys will be worn with black helmets, gloves and socks to offer a full visual experience for Petes fans. The jersey will be the official Petes alternate third jersey through next season.

The alternate black jerseys are available in the Petes store in person or online.

Sam McCue and Konnor Smith Return With Owen Sound Attack to Defeat Peterborough Petes, 4-1

It was bittersweet for the Petes to see their former teammates Sam McCue and Konnor Smith in different jerseys as they fell to the Owen Sound Attack, 4-1, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Thursday night.

On Jan. 2, the Petes acquired forward Nico Addy, defenceman Martin Matejicek and a third-round pick in 2026 in exchange for Smith and McCue. This was the first time the former Petes returned to the PMC after the trade.

Owen Sound drew first blood as Ethan Burroughs launched the puck out in front and New York Jets prospect Colby Barlow buried the one-timer for a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Not to be outdone, the Petes fired back with a one-timer of their own as Ryder McIntyre circled the net and made a cross-crease pass to Chase Lefebvre who scored on the wide-open net for a 1-1 tie and that was the score after two.

Owen Sound got on the powerplay as Deni Goure sniped a shot past Petes goaltender Liam Sztuska and the visitors regained the lead, 2-1.

The Petes looked to even things up with a man advantage of their own. Sam Sedley slapped the puck out of his defensive zone of Owen Sound and Petes forward Brennan Faulker could not corral the cleared puck. It wound up on Burroughs’s stick, got a breakaway and rifled it past Sztuska for a 3-1 lead and an insurance marker.

The Petes pulled their goaltender to create more scoring opportunities in an all-or-nothing situation. Smith had the puck in his own zone, shot it at the empty but rang the post. Servac Petrovsky picked up the loose change and scored to make it a 4-1 final for Owen Sound.

The Petes hit the road to take on their rival Oshawa Generals at the Tribute Communities Centre on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.

Peterborough Influencer Gets Lifetime Moment With An NFL Football Off Buffalo Bills Touchdown

Running and coaching influencer Brendan Carpenter got a taste of NFL history as he got to hold the ball thrown into the stands fresh off a touchdown at the Buffalo Bills playoff game at Highmark Stadium on Monday night.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen rushed for a 52-yard touchdown against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers then eventually threw the ball into the stands to a raucous Buffalo crowd as part of his celebration.

The Peterborough influencer did not initially catch the ball Allen threw. The lucky fan who did snag it allowed Carpenter to borrow it for a picture to create a lifelong memory.

“The ball got hit out of our hands by the guy beside us and landed in the lap of the guy in front of us,” he explained. “It was right in our grasp and the other guy made a lunge. It's still a cool story to have the ball for a second and glad the guy that got it was a lifelong Bills fan and let us snap a picture with it after the fact.”

The influencer got tickets to see the game after his collaboration with NFL Canada.

“We were blessed enough with tickets from my partnership with the NFL Canada that we established last year so we were already winning either way if we got the ball or not and was just happy to see the Bills up 21-0 at that point.”

The game was initially scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. but was moved to Monday at 4:30 p.m. New York Governor Kathy Hochul decided to postpone the game for safety reasons with a weather emergency, including heavy snowfall.

The team asked 200 snow shovellers to help clean the stadium at midnight Sunday since it was overflowing with snow. Even with the help, there was still lots of snow piled in the stadium but that added to the atmosphere said Carpenter.

“Being at the game was insane. No one does it like Bills Mafia,” he explained.” It didn't matter if the seats were cleared because no one ever sits down at a Bills game so standing in piles of snow after everyone tried to shovel the stadium just added to the folklore of Bills Fans.”

‘Bills Mafia’ is a term coined for Buffalo fans known for their crazy antics (among other things) during and before the game. A recent tradition is fans jumping through tables, emulating WWE wrestlers.

During the game, every time the Bills scored a touchdown, Bills Mafia was throwing snow into the air, celebrating their team’s score.

“It was crazy, though, with the snowball celebrations and everyone throwing them; I had never been so happy to be pelted with snow,” laughed Carpenter. “We are a different breed of fans and I wouldn't have it any other way. This year, I was in the stands for a 30+ degree and sun game, a 0 degree and rain game, and now a -20 and snow game and the fanbase never changes; we just show up, go through tables and enjoy the hell out of Bills football.”

The Bills defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-17 and advanced to the Divisional Round. They will host the defending Super Bowl Champion, the Kansas City Chiefs, this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Jan. 15

The Fleming Phoenix basketball and volleyball teams could not see much success but did salvage one victory over the past weekend.

The Phoenix men’s basketball team lost a nail-biter in overtime, 98-97, against the St. Lawrence Surge in Kingston on Saturday.

Fleming had led for three of four quarters but could not close it out. High scorers for the Phoenix were Shawn Blackwood with 39 points, Lystra White with 20 points and Paul-Ryan Molay with 19 points. 

The Phoenix men’s basketball team is back in action on Friday at home against the George Brown Huskies. The game, which takes place at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (PSWC), is also being used by the Phoenix to highlight the importance of mental health through the promotion and awareness of Bell Let’s Talk Day. The tip-off is 7 pm. 

Both the men's and women’s Phoenix volleyball teams played games at home this weekend as they hosted the Georgian Grizzlies to the PSWC on Saturday and the Canadore Panthers on Sunday.

It was close but no cigar for the men’s team as they lost all three sets to the Grizzlies on Saturday, 25-21, 30-28, and 26-24. 

They rebounded on Sunday’s game, taking three of the five sets from the Panthers, with Canadore winning two sets 25-14 and 25-23 while the Phoenix took two sets 25-19, 25-20 and then the deciding set 15-8. 

The women’s volleyball team took the first set against the Grizzlies, 25-22 but then lost the next three sets, 25-23, 25-14 and 25-15 on Saturday.

They saw the same result against the Canadore Panthers on Sunday. The Phoenix won the first set 25-17 and then dropped the next three sets, 25-10, 25-19 and 25-20. 

The next action for the men's and women’s Phoenix volleyball teams is on Wednesday when they travel to Seneca College to take on the Sting.

Peterborough Jr. A Lakers Draft Five Players In Ontario Junior Lacrosse League Including Three Top-Five Picks

The Peterborough Merit Precision Jr. A Lakers drafted five players, including three top-five picks, in the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) Entry Draft on Saturday.

Established in 1933, the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) consists of 11 teams across Ontario and is the top feeder league for the National Lacrosse League (NLL), with 16 OJLL alum being selected first overall since the inaugural NLL draft in 1996. The Lakers held the following picks in the draft:

  • First round - Second overall

  • First round - Third overall

  • First round - Fifth overall

  • Second round - 12th overall

  • Second Round - 16th overall

With the second overall pick, the Lakers chose goaltender Waukiigan Shognosh from the Wallaceburg Griffins. Last summer, he helped lead Team Ontario to a gold medal at the Canadian U17 boys box lacrosse championship in Regina.

Peterborough went back on the clock after their first pick, taking offensive standout Zachary McLean from the Gloucester Griffins third overall. He had 71 points in 23 games last year.

The Lakers then traded with the Six Nations Arrows, acquiring the fifth and 16th picks in exchange for their 13th pick and a first-round selection in 2025. They used their fifth overall pick to select Mason Cree from the Akwesasne Storm. He was also a part of Team Ontario's U17 gold victory in Saskatchewan.

With the 12th overall pick in the second round, the Lakers took Matthew Ford from the Milton Mavericks. The offensive force scored 88 points in 27 games last season.

With their final draft pick at 16th overall, the Lakers chose Adam Trumble of the Orillia Kings. He excelled in three varsity sports, hockey, football and lacrosse at Culver Military Academy last year. He is the third Trumble brother to play for the Jr. A Lakers; his oldest brother, Ben, played last season while his middle brother, Sam, is the face-off specialist for the team.

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Jan. 10

The Fleming Phoenix entered the new year with some new gym updates and fresh faces to the men’s basketball team against the Durham Lords but could not kick off January right.

The Phoenix fell to the Lords 79-68 at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (PSWC) on Wednesday. Fleming were the underdogs, sporting a 2-8 record to the powerhouse Lords winning nine of their ten games.

Fleming had five new players this semester that made their season debut with the team.

Shawn Blackwood had 37 points, Tristan Paguirigan scored 10 points, Paul-Ryan Molay netted nine points and Lystra White got eight points as Fleming’s top scorers.

The Chris Fee Cup kicked off the 64th Liftlock U11 Hockey Tournament as the host Peterborough Petes U11A took on the Toronto Wolverines U11A at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Friday morning.

The cup is a feature opening game against a visiting team against the host Petes team since 1997. Petes were victorious against the Wolverines, winning their first contest 4-1 to capture the 2024 Chris Fee Cup.

The tournament features 71 teams in 13 divisions playing throughout five arenas in Peterborough and the Kawarthas.

New Wave of Peterborough Petes Shine Despite 6-5 Overtime Loss to the Kingston Frontenacs

Despite taking a 6-5 overtime loss to the Kingston Frontenacs, the new blood of the Petes shined with each player earning at least a point at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Thursday night.

Grayden Strohack was the only trade deadline acquisition who was not dressed for the game due to an illness. This game also saw the return of former Pete Jax Dubois, who was traded to Kingston on Sunday.

Caden Taylor, who came over from the Sudbury Wolves, wasted no time making an impact on the team. He got a centring pass from Braydon McCallum and slipped it by JJ Salajko for a 1-0 lead.

Peterborough got into discipline problems early and came back to haunt them as Kingston got two consecutive powerplay goals for a 2-1 lead.

Petes defenceman Martin Matejicek registered a point as the primary assist for Chase Lefebvre, receiving a wide-angle pass from the win and buying a one-timer for a 2-2 tie.

In the final 90 seconds of the period, Quinton Pagé helped himself to a goal after Lefebvre had a chance to score uncontested but was stopped. He corraled his own rebound, threw it at the net for Pagé and scored for a 3-2 lead heading into the second.

The second period was all Kingston as Jacob Battaglia scored two straight goals to go with his first-period powerplay goal for a hat trick. Nathan Poole added another tally for the Frontenacs as they enjoyed a 5-3 lead headed into the final frame.

New Petes, Aiden Young, Nico Addy and William Haley made their presence felt by being involved in Peterborough’s next goal. Young had the secondary assist as Haley had a centring pass and took a shot but was stopped. Addy came in and pounced on the rebound on the backhand to score just 2:40 in the period and it was a 5-4 game.

Halfway through the period, the Petes’s first-round draft pick in the last OHL Priority Selection, Carson Cameron, was activated from his defensive spot and wristed it top shelf to tie the game at five and eventually into overtime.

Unfortunately, Peterborough had incurred a delay of game penalty prior to the period’s end that trickled into overtime. With a four-on-three man advantage, Paul Ludwinski one-timed it home for a Kingston 6-5 win.

The Petes will face another division rival as they host the Oshawa Generals this Saturday at the PMC. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
