SPSS Student Amelia Williams Takes Her Next Hockey Step By Committing To Sault College

The defenceman says Sault College was one of the few schools that offered a hockey program in the province and she jumped at the opportunity when she found out she was recruited.

“If I wanted to continue to play hockey, this was my only opportunity to,” explained Williams.

She is graduating from SPSS this summer and will move to Sault Ste. Marie around August. Williams says she’s excited but is surreal that she’ll be going through a major lifestyle change over the summer.

“It's crazy that I'm graduating and moving away,” she explained. “I wasn't expecting to go away but this opportunity just came and I'm really excited.”

Williams has been playing hockey since she was in grade two. She’s won a Kawartha AAA High School Girls hockey championship and COSSA championship with SPSS in 2019.

She’s also been a member of the Peterborough Ice Kats AA U18 team for the last two seasons. She finished this season with two goals and seven assists in 52 games as the team’s top-scoring defenseman.

Williams will take electrical engineering at Sault College and either wants to play professional hockey or become an electrician after graduation from post-secondary education.

Josh Currier's Eight-Point Night Helps Peterborough Lakers Rout Brampton Excelsiors 13-2 in Lopsided Win

It was the Josh Currier show for the Peterborough Lakers to get their most lopsided victory of the season, routing the Brampton Excelsiors 13-2 at the Brampton Memorial Arena on Sunday night.

In all three matchups so far, the road team has won every game between the Excelsiors and Lakers. Photo courtesy of David Pickering and the Peterborough Lakers.

Currier tacked on his first point, scoring the game’s opening goal just under four minutes in. Lucas Ferreira got one back from Brampton just under three minutes later for the 1-1 tie. Currier kept going with his second goal of the game and DJ Clarke — with his first of the season — got into the mix with Peterborough for a 3-1 lead. Tyler Ferreira got one back for Brampton to round out the first period but it was all downhill for the Excelsiors from there. Currier had two goals and an assist during that period.

Peterborough asserted their dominance with six different goal-scorer while allowing none. Mitch Ogalvie, Austin Hasen, Taite Cattoni and Turner Evans found their way to the scoresheet. Clarke got his second of the game and Currier polished off the hat trick to go with an assist for the period. The Lakers led 9-2 going into the final frame.

The Lakers continued to score while maintaining their defensive prowess, shutting out the Excelsiors in the third period. Cattoni and Evans got power play goals to open things for Peterborough. Cattoni then got a hat trick of his off to cap off a seven-point night. Owen Hiltz scored his first of the season for the Lakers to cap off a road win and get revenge from Peterborough’s home opener.

The win improves the Lakers ‘ record to 5-2 while holding second place. Brampton falls to 1-6 and sits in fifth in the league at the bottom of the standings. Lakers goaltender Josh Hutchinson shut out Brampton for over 47 minutes of the game to pick up the win.

The Lakers will get another crack at defeating the league-leading Six Nations Chiefs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre this Thursday. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Kodiaks got off to a hot start on both sides during the first 15 minutes of the game. Cobourg kicked off with three straight goals, twice from Tyler Hendryks and one from Tanner Buck for a 3-0 lead. The Kodiak’s Emerson Clark got himself into some penalty trouble, getting a roughing, fighting and instigator penalty including a second major that helped Peterborough’s power play came alive with 5:33 left in the period. Peterborough had a 10-minute power play that saw Josh Currier twice and Holden Cattoni got three powerplay goals to tie it 3-3 at the end of the first.

Peterborough continued their power play onslaught with Turner Evans to kick off the second period for a 4-3 lead. Cobourg mustered a shorthanded goal at the tail end of the major penalty as Curtis Romancych tied the game. Hendryks got his hat trick not halfway through the game to give Cobourg the lead. Thomas Hoggarth and Tanner Buck scored a goal apiece for the Lakers and Kodiaks respectively that saw Cobourg lead 6-5 after two periods.

The Lakers took over the game once the final frame began. Despite being short-handed, Hoggarth got his second of the game followed by Austin Hasen getting on the score sheet, 29 seconds later. Cattoni capped his second of the game and Hoggarth joined the scoring again, getting a hat trick. Hasen scored the second time this period to round out the five-goal run for the Lakers to lead 10-6. Cobourg mustered two goals but it was too little, too late as the Lakers hung on for the 10-8 win.

The win keeps Peterborough in second place in the league with a 4-2 record while Cobourg is in fourth with a 1-4 record.

The Lakers head to Brampton to take on the Excelsiors on Sunday in their third matchup of the season. Both teams defeated each other on the road in their first two games.
