All proceeds go towards St. Joseph’s to upgrade its infrastructure since the long-term care home is roughly 20 years old and needs work according to administrative coordinator Sarah Cox.

Being a building that runs every day of the year, 24/7, there are some capital upgrades we need,” she explained. “Flooring, our HVAC systems, new technology, medical equipment, things like that are what we are trying to raise money for the 200 residents that live at St. Joseph's.”

Cox said last year’s event raised roughly $26,000 and aims to meet if not exceed that goal for the tournament’s third inception. The ultimate goal over the next few years is to raise $3.5 million.

“We're about $1.6 million into that so there's still a few years to go,” said Cox. “We do different fundraisers all year around, Christmas mailings, stuff with the families at St. Joseph's to get them involved. Just different fundraisers to raise money towards that $3.5 million.”

A silent auction was held after the tournament as an additional source to raise funds for the not-for-profit long-term care home.

Peterborough Lakers Deal Shawn Evans To Akwesasne Bucks After Second Trade Request

UPDATED: 2:17 p.m. 14-06-23

The Peterborough Lakers have made a blockbuster trade sending hometown forward Shawn Evans to the Akwesasne Bucks Sr. B team in exchange for monetary compensation for the 2023 season, announced on Wednesday.

Evans reportedly had sent a second request to be traded this year and wanted to at the season’s beginning in May, according to a press release.

Certain concessions needed to be made in order for him to continue playing with the Lakers. Those requirements were allegedly made as Evans dressed for the first game of the season against the Brampton Excelsiors on the road with a goal and five assists.

Evans had not suited up since due to work commitments and ongoing legal matters surrounding an insurance claim with the third-party carpet installer at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. As a result, the issues impacted the laying of the carpet that resulted in the City's decision to deny its use by the Lakers, Junior A’s and minor leagues.

Evans has not fully recovered from an injury sustained during game six of last year's Mann Cup as stated in a press release.

When Evans had made the second trade request to general manager Paul Day, the latter learned through the Ontario Lacrosse Association that Evans had applied to Lacrosse Canada to be re-classified for Sr. B Lacrosse with the Akwesasne Bucks. The Board approved the negotiation for the trade Tuesday night.

The Lakers released the following statement regarding Evans being traded:

“The Peterborough Lakers express their gratitude to Shawn Evans for his contributions and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. The team will continue to focus on their pursuit of success and remain committed to their loyal fan base.”

Evans released the following statement on his Facebook:

A huge thank you to the Lakers fans for the unwavering support over the past 20 years. Truly the best lacrosse fans in the world.

No better feeling than having a city cheering on the team on a Thursday night at a packed Memorial Centre and hosting that Mann Cup over my head with a sold-out crowd waving their bras and shirts.

I want to thank my Lakers teammates from past and present for an unbelievable experience, this wasn't by choice and could have been handled differently in a professional manner. Instead, l will choose to cherish the unbelievable and greatest moments of my lacrosse career wearing the blue and red with pride.

Thank you Lakers Fans and teammates.

Second Annual Gary Dalliday Memorial Golf Tournament Hits Peterborough Golf & Country Club Aug. 14 In Support of Community Care Peterborough

The launch of the second annual Gary Dalliday Memorial charity golf tournament has been set for Aug. 14 at the Peterborough Golf & Country Club in support of Community Care Peterborough announced on Tuesday morning.

Last year’s inaugural event was held at the Quarry with 99 golfers and raiser over $20,000 for COmmmunity Care Peterborough. Dalliday passed away on Aug. 10, 2018. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

This year’s event welcomes 144 golfers to participate at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club, a change of venue from last year’s event which was held at the Quarry.

“We wanted to have the tournament here then Covid hit,” explained Pete Dalliday, son of Gary. “The Quarry was great last year and we appreciate what Doug and everyone did but I think it was always meant to be here.”

Proceeds will go to the Community Care’s Meals on Wheels program. It provided food to seniors living alone, adults with disabilities unable to cook or get groceries or recently discharged patients from hospitals. Dalliday often delivered meals on the organization’s behalf for the program. The money raised will also go towards the Caremoblie program that provides accessible transportation for seniors or adults with disabilities in the City and County.

About $20,000 was raised from last year’s event and this year’s goal is looking to get $30,000 according to Alicia Vandine, Community Care donor relations.

We only receive about 50 per cent of our funding from the Ontario Government so as you can imagine, fundraising is as important as we're seeing the need for seniors really increase,” she said.

Participating golfers will receive 18 holes to play at Peterborough Golf and Country Club, a barbecue lunch, dinner and a chance to win prizes at a silent auction.

Registration, sponsorships or auction donations can be made online at the Community Care’s website.

The tournament’s idea spawned from his grandson Nick who previously did a placement with Community Care.

Pink In The Park was inspired from Chris Hinze and his fundraising efforts for his late wife Melissa Hinze through Hockey Battles Cancer.

“Seeing first hand the success and how Pink In The Rink was received in the hockey community, I felt that it would be a great opportunity to carry that into the baseball world,” said lead organizer Dan Perilli, who has kids on both the U8 and U11 teams. “Having Cole Designs create a logo, I began branding and organizing how we wanted this event to look, feel and bring awareness to such an important cause. Many of us are touched or know someone who has been touched by this disease, so we are committed to continuing this event to knock cancer out of the park.”

The event included a barbecue, silent auction, ‘Strike Out Cancer’ hats and t-shirts for sale and a weekend of baseball fun for the young athletes who participated.

“It was a beautiful weekend full of amazing energy and we look forward to carrying ahead with this for years to come. Come out next year to help support your hometown Peterborough Tigers and support Metastatic Breast Cancer Research,” concluded Perilli.
