Read MoreThe Lakefield Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is a wonderful non-profit organization that rescues stray, injured and abused animals in the Lakefield area. Take the case of "Autumn", a severely injured dog that recently came to them. As they posted to their Facebook page, Autumn "was rescued from a backyard where she's been tied up for WHO knows how long! Her owners either didn't notice or didn't care that her eye infection had caused her eye to rupture." The photos below—via their Facebook post—are utterly disturbing to look at but this is the kind of horrific stuff they deal with, and why their role is vital in saving animals.
Autumn has had her eye removed and is safe in a foster home until she's ready for her new forever home, LAWS says. She has an amazing personality, even after all she's been through. If you're interested in donating to help with the medical costs, contact LAWS. Every amount counts in large amounts.
UPDATED post: And here is what Autumn looks like now after love and care...

Our Aaron Elliott tells the story in his words...
The phone rang just before dinner time on October 2nd and I quickly flashed a look to see that it was my mom calling through. On the other end, she explained to me how a man who was over giving her a quote for yard work had heard a faint animal cry and went on to discover three very small newborn kittens in the shed underneath the back deck, huddled together on the dirt floor.
Not knowing what to do herself, she called our house knowing that my wife with her experience working with animals would have a better idea than her. After asking if any cats had been spotted, my mom waited and watched for awhile and none returned.
Figuring they had unfortunately been abandoned, my wife went over to have a look. She had me on the phone not long after arriving to tell me that she discovered a 4th kitten who had wandered away and was under a lawn mower she had moved—and somehow avoided hurting it in the process!
About 10 minutes later after having a picture sent via text, my wife's car pulled into the lane way and she was in the door within seconds with a box and 4 new kittens. She couldn't say no! Three long nights later with feedings happening around the clock, we are happy to report we're foster parents to these four (see pictures throughout this post) incredibly cute and all quite distinct bundles of fur.
Each of us in the family was given a chance to name one. We chose the names Molly, Jerry, Thomas (eventually changed to Hazel based on the whole gender thing) and Mel Gibson.
We know it'll be an interesting and hopefully happy journey raising them until they can be adopted out (we already have two cats and a dog). It's a rewarding experience we definitely look forward to helping out with!

You probably remember the story of Hank the young fledgling that was rescued at 2 weeks old by the Williams family in Peterborough after almost getting killed by a cat. Well Hank has now become domesticated after attempts to release him into the wild—he loves his adopted family—and part of his diet as the Williams family pet includes Doritos Roulette flavour, where a few of the chips in each bag are insanely hot. If Hank is in the backyard playing with his wild Blue Jay buddy, one of the tricks to entice him to come home when it's meal time is with Roulette Doritos. See more pictures and tweets below regarding Hank "Doritos Roulette" Williams....
Hey @DoritosCanada you do realize I have raised a blue jay from a baby that is now my pet. He absolutely loves the Roulette Doritos!

Peterborough, meet Thorn and Thistle—the latest adorable additions to Riverview Park & Zoo. They are African Crested Porcupines who just arrived Thursday night (October 2nd) from Edmonton and were quite interested in exploring their new quarters in the zoo's animal health care centre. They'll have at least 30 days of quarantine to complete before being officially unveiled to the public, the zoo's Manager and Curator Jim Moloney tells us. But here is your first look...

Peterborough Chamber CEO Stu Harrison spotted a pig crossing the road today (September 9th) on Braidwood Ave. near the Memorial Centre. Why did the pig cross the road? Well we're not sure where it was heading, but it seemed like it owned the street—if not the neighbourhood...
